Carroll returns from deployment in Mediterranean
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class
Larry D. Carroll, son of Linda
C. Emst of and Larry L. Carroll
of Kings Mountain, recently re-
turned from a six-month de-
ployment to the Mediterranean,
Adriatic and Black seas with the
destroyer USS Deyo, homeport-
ed in Charleston, SC.
Carroll was one of 325 sailors
who completed the 25,000-mile
voyage which included duty off
Bosnia-Herzegovina in the
Adriatic Sea, and an historic
visit to Bulgaria and the Black
Sea.
hands-on instruction, and an
emphasis on physical fitness. In
particular, Borchert learned
naval customs, first aid, fire
fighting, water safety and sur-
vival, and a variety of safety
skills required for working
around ships and aircraft.
Borchert and other recruits al-
so received instruction on the
Navy's core values - honor,
Carroll began the deployment
by participating in the 50th an-
niversary of D-Day with visits
to England and France. During
the D-Day commemoration,
Carroll's ship helped support the
visit of President Bill Clinton
and numerous other government
and military officials, as well as
thousands of World War II vet-
erans.
While in the Black Sea,
Carroll participated in the
multinational naval exercise
that included Romania, Greece,
Republic of Georgia _ and
courage and commitment; and
what the words mean in guiding
personal and professional con-
duct. Borchert joins 55,000 men
and women who will enter the
Navy this year from all over the
country.
Men and: women train togeth-
er from their first day in the
Ukraine. It was the first time the
former cold war adversaries and
had worked together in a com-
bined exercise. In Bulgaria,
USS Deyo crew members vol-
unteered their time to repaint an
orphanage and delivered cloth-
ing, school supplies and toys to
more than 50 children.
For the past two months,
Carroll's ship supported United
Nations sanctions to deny arms
and war materials to the re-
publics’ of the former
Yugoslavia. Carroll also visited
Spain. Italy, Greece, Crete and
navy just as they do aboard
ships and at shore bases around
the world. To reinforce the team
concept, Borchert and other re-
cruits also were trained in pre-
venting sexual harassment and
ensuring equal opportunity.
Borchert is a 1992 graduate
of Kings Mountain High
School.
Turkey during the deployment.
Carroll's involvement in the
deployment is an example of
how the Navy-Marine Corps
team is designed to operate
overseas and respond quickly
when needed. Whether deliver-
ing humanitarian assistance,
cargo, or troops from the sea,
these highly-trained naval
forces provide a unique crisis-
response option, which can be
withdrawn quickly when no
longer needed.
Carroll is a 1990 graduate of
Kings Mountain High School.
