During the eight-week pro- gram, Borchert completed a va- riety of training which included classroom study, practical Carroll returns from deployment in Mediterranean Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Larry D. Carroll, son of Linda C. Emst of and Larry L. Carroll of Kings Mountain, recently re- turned from a six-month de- ployment to the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Black seas with the destroyer USS Deyo, homeport- ed in Charleston, SC. Carroll was one of 325 sailors who completed the 25,000-mile voyage which included duty off Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Adriatic Sea, and an historic visit to Bulgaria and the Black Sea. hands-on instruction, and an emphasis on physical fitness. In particular, Borchert learned naval customs, first aid, fire fighting, water safety and sur- vival, and a variety of safety skills required for working around ships and aircraft. Borchert and other recruits al- so received instruction on the Navy's core values - honor, Carroll began the deployment by participating in the 50th an- niversary of D-Day with visits to England and France. During the D-Day commemoration, Carroll's ship helped support the visit of President Bill Clinton and numerous other government and military officials, as well as thousands of World War II vet- erans. While in the Black Sea, Carroll participated in the multinational naval exercise that included Romania, Greece, Republic of Georgia _ and courage and commitment; and what the words mean in guiding personal and professional con- duct. Borchert joins 55,000 men and women who will enter the Navy this year from all over the country. Men and: women train togeth- er from their first day in the Ukraine. It was the first time the former cold war adversaries and had worked together in a com- bined exercise. In Bulgaria, USS Deyo crew members vol- unteered their time to repaint an orphanage and delivered cloth- ing, school supplies and toys to more than 50 children. For the past two months, Carroll's ship supported United Nations sanctions to deny arms and war materials to the re- publics’ of the former Yugoslavia. Carroll also visited Spain. Italy, Greece, Crete and navy just as they do aboard ships and at shore bases around the world. To reinforce the team concept, Borchert and other re- cruits also were trained in pre- venting sexual harassment and ensuring equal opportunity. Borchert is a 1992 graduate of Kings Mountain High School. Turkey during the deployment. Carroll's involvement in the deployment is an example of how the Navy-Marine Corps team is designed to operate overseas and respond quickly when needed. Whether deliver- ing humanitarian assistance, cargo, or troops from the sea, these highly-trained naval forces provide a unique crisis- response option, which can be withdrawn quickly when no longer needed. Stokes recently participated in Cobra Gold '94 exercise in Thailand.
