Mediator returning to Cleveland County 4 U.S. District Judge Stanley Sporkin is sending his mediator back to Cleveland County to at- tempt a settlement in the recent skirmish in the Voting Rights lawsuit between the county board of commissioners and the NAACP. The two parties were told Tuesday to make a decision in the current dispute on the two minority choices on the county board. The county commissioners recently chose two individuals the NAACP had objected to and the matter went back to the fed- eral courts. Les Roark, a member of Cleveland County Association of Government By the People, the new organization challeng- ing the consent decree, said that volunteers have raised $13,000 of the $15,000 needed to hire a lawyer to raise constitutional questions about the decree. Roark said the provision in the decree that concerns him is the requirement to elect all sev- en commissioners in 1998 from 14 candidates on a ballot where voters are instructed to vote for only four. "I am against limited voting," said Roark. Roark said he didn't know if limited voting had ever been challenged in the courts but CCAGTP is ready to do just that.
