KM reading, math scores up Reading and mathematics scores are up in the Kings Mountain District Schools, ac- cording to the latest Report Card released by the State Board of Education. A comparison of 1993 and. 1994 Report Card performance (percent of students achieving at proficient levels) shows that, reading scores in grades 3-8 were 66.4 percent in 1994 com- pared to 59.3 in 1993 and math scores were 70.1 in 1994 com- pared to 59.3 in 1993 in the same grade levels. The End of Course Core scores were down, from 39.2 in 1993 to 34.5 in 1994. "The reforms we have insti- tuted are working and students are scoring better on end-of- grade tests," Bob Etheridge, State Superintendent said as he released the statewide figures on North Carolina's primary ac- countability tool. Etheridge said the scores "are still too low, but students are making progress." At the high school level, scores on the end-of-course tests were more mixed with substantial progress being shown in Algebrae I, but a drop in average scores in the high school core curriculum. High school students in advanced courses scored well in mathe- matics, geometry, Algebrae II and chemistry. Dr. Suzanne Triplett, assistant state superintendent for Accountability Services, said she is encouraged by the in- creased scores in grades 3-8, feels that the new mathematics curriculum in high school is ful- filling its promise, but feels the scores again show how far North Carolina must go to fully meet its responsibilities to stu- dents. "We are on the right track as we witness what is happening in the early grades. But we must do more to assure that students can read and compute in the early grades before they. enter high school, " she said. This was the second year of a changed format for the Report Card as the state moves to more local reporting of accountability information, including individu- al school report cards to be re- leased by March 15 of this year.
