Garden Club visits Stowe Gardens Fifteen members of the Open Gate Garden Club visited the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens April 12. Sheila Palmer, Coordinator of Volunteers, showed a video and gave a most informative talk on the gardens and a projection of excit- ing future development. The gardens are located on the North Carolina-South Carolina border and the property borders Lake Wylie. Future development plans include a separate lake en- trance, making the gardens accessi- ble by boat. The focal point of the garden is the vast perennial garden. More than 300 varieties ‘are displayed over a half acre area. The beds are designed for specific color combi- nations and are complimented by a framework of woody shrubs and companion plants. Another popular highlight is the collection of day lilies. At its peak during June, this breathtaking mixed planting of more than 275 varieties offer continuous blooms from late May until October. More than a study of beauty, Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens is also a learning laboratory. The gar- den sponsors ongoing speaker se- ries, playing host to local, regional and national experts on topics re- lating to gardening. For instance on May 2 there is a program "All About Roses." On May 25 the pro- gram will be "The Heirloom Garden." AER Mountain Weather.
