Norma Cissell remembered
A somber group of Kings
Mountain High School students,
teachers and other friends of the
late Norma Lou Cissell were chal-
lenged by Rev. Billy Houze to "cel-
ebrate" her life, not mourn her, at a
memorial service Thursday after-
noon in B. N. Barnes Auditorium.
Yellow long-stemmed roses
were placed by friends in a basket
on the stage of the auditorium prior
to the worship service. A memorial
table in the lobby of the auditorium
held a family portrait of Mrs.
Cissell and her two children.
Speakers on the program, two
students and two teachers, reflected
on Cissell's life and said the 45-
year-old teacher left abruptly after
a short illness with cancer but last-
ing memories remain.
Donna Russ, who had taught
with Cissell for 10 years, recalled
that Mrs. Cissell had wanted to:
teach school since she was a!
kindergarten student and had
worked hard to achieve her goal.
"I told Norma Lou that with her
love for ‘country. music, her name
and her ‘upbringing in Kentucky
that she should have been a coun-
try music singer," said Russ. |
"Norma, in typical Norma good
humor fashion, responded that: the
main reason was that she wanted to
be a teacher and the other reason
was that she could not sing."
Russ said that Cissell sent a
message to her students to continue
their education, have a plan and
overcome obstacles.
Cissell, the oldest of five chil-
dren, set her goal as a child to com-
plete her education despite the ob-
stacles.
-
NORMA CISSELL
William Towery called Cissell a
"second Mom" and a "Big Sister"
and recited his original poem.
Nikki Gladden said that Cissell lis-
tened to students and kept her
sense of humor.
Engligh teacher Nelson Connor
shared the remarks that he had
made at Cissell's funeral April 20
in Elizabethtown, Ky and said that
Cissell's love for her children, J. B.
and Becky, the other members of
her family and her students was
unconditional.
"She was grateful for life, gave
the individual attention that stu-
dents need and was always smil-
ing," he said.
Connor closed his remarks with
the Serenity Prayer.
Houze, a member of the Board
of Education and a minister, said
that he became acquainted with
Mrs. Cissell when she taught at
Grover Elementary School. He said
Cissell had taught in every school
in the system, except the present
Middle School.
"I first noticed her rapport with
kids when I saw her square danc-
ing with a group of elementary
children at a Grover Spring Fest,"
said Houze.
Houze said that her "beautiful
spirit will live on in the hearts of
all who knew and loved her."
Sherry Young accompanied The
Kings Revue in "Maybe Someday."
The taped rendition by Linda
Ronstadt, "Goodbye My Friend,"
was featured with the closing
"Taps" by Laura Smith.
