Cleveland County voters defeat- ed a $2.8 million bond referendum for Cleveland Community College Tuesday by 446 votes as a light trickling of voters went to the polls. The unofficial count was 1,903 against and 1,457 for as 3,368 vot- ers went to the polls. Only 7.96 percent of the coun- ty's 42,307 registered voters in the county turned out to vote. It was a disappointing blow for community college officials who lost $2.2 million in matching funds from the state - a total of $5 million had the bonds passed for a classroom and training center for fire, rescue and law enforcement personnel and future land purchase. Ruth Wilson, elections board of- ficial, said the special referendum, the only item on the ballot, had not been well publicized although there was apparently no organized opposition. College officials had been out in the county giving pro- grams to churches and civic clubs and schools county wide had en- dorsed the referendum. Upper Cleveland voters dealt the largest blows vote-wise to the ref- erendum and Shelby was not solid. Kings Mountain supported the ref- erendum. The vote totals in Number 4 Township were: Bethware, 44 for and 48 against; Grover, 29 for and 28 against; East King Mountain, 35 for and 34 against; and West Kings Mountain, 115 for and 44 against. Elsewhere in the county the pat- tern showed the same trickling of voters, although higher tallies in Upper Cleveland County. Other precinct vote totals: Boiling Springs, 104 for and 94 against; Casar, 18 for and 64 against; Fallston, 33 for and 75 against; Holly Springs, 13 for and 17 against; Kingstown, 43 for and 33 against; Lattimore, 39 for and 115 against; Lawndale, 40 for and 131 against; Mrb-Yo, 16 for and 36 against; Mulls, 27 for and 99 against; Polkville, 37 for and 136 against; Rippy, 74 for and 101 against; Shanghai, 38 for and 89 against; Shelby 1, 117 for and 98 against; Shelby 2, 164 for and 132 against; Shelby 3, 66 for and 93 against; Shelby 4, 92 for and 70 PREGNANT?
