Obituaries Page 2A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, May 25, 1995 TOM W. SMITH = Tom ‘W. Smith, 83. 1608 Bethlehem Road, Kings Mountain, died May 21. 1995 at his home. A native of Landrum, SC, he was the son of the late William Ernest and Elsie Edwards Smith. He was a retired textiles supervisor and a member of First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Caldwell Smith of the home; a son, Barry Smith of Trophy Club, Texas; a daughter, Jill Smith of Kings Mountain; three brothers, James Smith and Leonard Smith of Landrum; SC, and Allen Smith of Simpsonville, SC; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Neil of Landrum, SC; and a grandson. The funeral was conducted by Dr. John Sloan Tuesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. PATTERSON YORK, SC - Wister Orvan "W.0." Patterson, 84, 295 Ramah Church Road, died May 18, 1995 at Piedmont Medical Center. A native of York County, he was the son of Sumie James and Minnie Lee Griffin Patterson. He was retired as owner/operator of Patterson's Grocery and was also a retired farmer. He was married to the late Selma Lemmon S. Patterson and was a member of Ramah Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Della Campbell Patterson of York; four sons, David Patterson, Carl "Bill" Patterson, Roy Patterson and Clyde Patterson, all of York; three daugh- ters, Katherine Patterson Jackson and Nancy Patterson Wyatt of York and Agnes Patterson Braziel of West Columbia; eight step-chil- dren, 13 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. Al Daniel and William Edwards Sunday at 3 p.m. at Ramah Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Beersheba Presbyterian Church cemetery. ASHWORTH GASTONIA - Nellie Glaze Ashworth, 78, 2502 Briar Oak Drive, died May 18, 1995 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. A native of White County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Elbert Washington and Mary Jane Tench Glaze and wife of the late Alvin Ashworth. She was a home- maker. She is survived by two sons, Carl Houck of Gastonia and Billy Halk of Cleveland, Ohio; four step- sons, Ralph Dana Ashworth of Beliot, Ohio, Dennis Ashworth of Kenova, W. Va,, Larry Ashworth of Shelby and Terry Ashworth of Wayne, W. Va.; a sister, Lucille Hale of Kings Mountain; six grandchildren, 10 step-grandchil- dren, eight great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Phillip Frady Sunday at 2 p.m. at Harris Chapel, Kings Mountain. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. BILLY J. ARROWOOD CHESNEE, SC - Billy Jerry Arrowood, 61, 156 Griffin Road, died May 22, 1995 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Eddie Lee and Geneva Horton Arrowood. He was self-employed and was a member of Oakview Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the VFW. He is survived by his wife, Mary G. Arrowood of the home; daugh- ter, Marcy Bridges of Kings Mountain; step-daughters, Teresa Mize of Cowpens and Melissa and April Barnhill of Carolina Beach; sons, Terry and Jeffrey Arrowood of Gastonia; step-son, Larry Moore of Chesnee; sister, Janice Payne of Bush, Louisiana; brother, Mike Arrowood of Hendersonville; four grandchildren and three step- grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Larry Coates Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Forest Lawn Chapel. Burial was in Springhill Memorial Gardens. CHARLES SPEARMAN Mary Ware Spearman, 73, of 2032 Shelby Rd., died May 16, 1995 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, she was the widow of Charles E. Spearman and former owner of Pauline Store. She was the daugh- ter of the late Charles P. and Martha Lou Carroll Weir. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Charles P. and Mary Ann Spearman of Kings Mountain; two daughters and sons- in-law, Dianne and Bart George of Kings Mountain and Norma and Carl Herman of Mebane; four brothers, C. D. Ware, James Ware, Robert Ware and Howard Ware, all of Kings Mountain; four grand- children, Carla Herman Soule and husband Jeremy Soule; Josh Herman and Caleb and Zachery George; and one great-granddaugh- ter, Hannah Soule. The funeral was conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church by Rev. Harold Beam and Rev. Russell Fitts. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery. STAFFORD Clyde Eroscoe Stafford, 90, 500 Woodland Drive, Kings Mountain, died May 22, 1995 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. A native of Statesville, he was the son of the late Orville and Ida Mae McGee Stafford. He was a re- tired machinist for the Gastonia Gazette and Shelby Daily Star, and was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Thompson Stafford of Kings Mountain; two sons, Robert E. Stafford of Williamsburg, VA and Clyde O. Stafford of Lake Norman; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Bennett of Kings Mountain and Mrs. Martha Habay of Pittsburgh, PA; two sisters, Mrs. Electa Dixon of Los Angeles and Mrs. Margaret Cash of Statesville; and 16 grand- children. RUTH DEAL Ruth Wilson Hullender Deal, 74, 121 Whitney Courtney Drive, Kings Mountain, died May 18, 1995 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur F. and Bessie Smith Wilson. She was retired from Carlton Yarns, Crowders Mountain. She was the wife of the late Floyd Hullender and James Deal. She is survived by four sons, Michael Deal and Bobby Hullender of Kings Mountain, Randy Deal of Gastonia and Lawrence Hullender of Cannon Beach, Oregon; four daughters, Becky Clark of Gastonia, Jan Ledford and Louise Tucker of Kings Mountain and Joyce Harding of Bessemer City; two brothers, Bill Wilson of Gastonia and James Wilson of Bessemer City; two sisters, Myrtle Stroupe and Marie Barber of Kings Mountain; 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. WILKEY LINCOLNTON - Jackie Payne Wilkey, 57, 225 Starlight Drive, died May 17, 1995 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Ina Barber Payne. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Robert Wilkey; two sons, Terry Arrowood of Lowell and Jeff Arrowood of Bessemer City; a daughter, Marcia Bridges of Kings Mountain; four stepdaughters, Robin Wilkey of Stanford, Sandra Bay of Gastonia, Katie Farris of Kings Mountain and Carolyn Coy of Hollywood, Florida; a sister, Sandra Ray of Blacksburg, SC; and OALEE RIPPY GASTONIA - Oalee "Paw-Paw" Rippy, 78, of 2603 Lowell Rd., died May 21, 1995 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of York, SC, he was the son of the late William G. and Louise McDaniel Rippy and father of the late Linda Louise Hipps. For 52 years Mr. Rippy was a watchmaker and jewelry repairman for Brownlee Jewelers in Charlotte, Stroupe's Jewelers in Cherryville and operated his own shop in Park N Shop, Charlotte. After retirement he worked with Dellinger's in Gastonia. He also operated Quality Discount Furniture Co. in Cherryville. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of Amvets and Disabled American Veterans, Mount Holly-Belmont Chapter. He was a deacon at Oakland Memorial Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Genevieve Oates Rippy; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Jeanette Potter of Dallas and Mrs. Donna Sloan-Fite of Gastonia; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Snider of Dallas and Mrs. Beatrice Woods of Kings Mountain; 10 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. The fu- neral was conducted Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Oakland Memorial Baptist Church by Rev. Mike Criswell. Burial was in Gaston Memorial Park. Pallbearers were members of the Adult Men's Sunday School Class of Oakland Memorial Church. ELLA G. PRIDMORE Ella Galloway Pridmore, 85, 255 Oak Grove Road, Kings Mountain, died May 21, 1995 at her home. A native of Knoxville, TN, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Maude Bowman Galloway, and wife of the late Tillman Pridmore. She was a homemaker and a member of Patterson Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by her daugh- ters, Margaret Henderson of Kings Mountain and Frances Bridges of Stanley; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. ELLIS GROVER - J.D. Ellis, 81, 137 Pine Hollow Drive, died May 17, 1995 at his residence. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Will and Bessie Camp Ellis. He was preced- ed in death by his first wife, Evelyn Dorsey Ellis, and his son, | Steve Ellis. Loi He was retired from Superior Feed Mill and served as Manager . of the Cleveland County ASC Office until 1949. He was a mem- ber of Grover First Baptist Church where he was Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was a for- mer member of Patterson Springs Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons | and Sunday School Superintendent. 4 He was active in numerous com- munity services. He was retired chairman of the Board of Directors | of No. 3 Fire Department, was a charter member of No. 3 Ruritan Club, served on the Cleveland County School Board from 1958- 68 and was instrumental in getting two major high schools for Cleveland County, and was a life- long Democrat who was involved in local and state politics. He is survived by his wife, Helen Mcintyre Ellis of the home; his son, Ed Ervin and wife Karen of Poplar Bluff, MO; daughter-in- law Jo Ellis Anthony and husband Ray; grandson, Chris Ellis and wife Pam Frazier Ellis of Grover; great-grandson, Lewis Ellis of Grover; and two step-grandsons, Eric Ervin of the U.S. Marines in Pekin, Ill., and John Ervin of the U.S. Navy in Iceland. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. John Bridges and James McKinney and Dr. Bobby Gantt Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grover First Baptist Church. Burial was in Patterson Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
