Queen, Bridges Athletes of Year Two seniors who excelled in several sports were selected Athletes of the Year at Monday night's annual spring sports ban- quet at Kings Mountain High School. Karen Queen, a six-time All- Southwestern 3-A Conference per- former, was named WKMT Female Athlete of the Year and Kenny Bridges, who was unbeaten against conference opponents all four years as a wrestler, was named Kings Mountain Herald Male Athlete of the Year. Gil McGregor, former Wake Forest basketball standout and now a color analyst for Charlotte Hornets games, was guest speaker. Queen was an all-conference Trophy winners at Monday night's Kings Mountain High sports banquet included, front row, Athletes of the Year Kenny Bridges and Karen Queen; back row, left to right, Bethany Jimison, Tina Welch choice two years each in basket- ball, volleyball and softball, and she was conference player of the year in volleyball her senior year after leading the Lady Mountaineers to the SWC champi- onship. Bridges was all-conference four years in a row in wrestling and capped off a brilliant prep career this year by finishing second in the state in the 135-pound division. He was all-conference in baseball as a junior and was a two-year varsity starter in football. In addition, Bridges also ex- celled in the classroom and partici- pated in numerous extra-curricular activities. "Kenny Bridges is an excellent student athlete," said his wrestling coach, Dave Farquharson. "He is hard working and dedicated in ev- ery sport he plays. His attitude, on and off the playing field, should serve as an example for other ath- letes." Retiring football coach Dennis Hicks and his wife, Katherine, who prepared post-game meals for play- ers and persons working the press box, were selected by the Mountaineer Club as Boosters of the Year. Keith Falls of Linwood Produce was given the club's Fan Appreciation Award. Other trophy winners included: Girls basketball - All- Conference awards, Karen Queen and Tameeka Anderson; free throw award, Patricia Littlejohn; coach's award, Elisabeth Tiensinga; most improved player, April Putnam; de- fensive player of the year, Karen Queen; offensive player of the year, Tameeka Anderson. Golf - All-Conference, Brad Leonard; most outstanding, Brad Leonard. Boys track - Most outstanding in field events, Jeremy Martin; most outstanding in track events, Shane Logan; All-Conference, Jeremy Martin, R.J.
