Driving for Gulf Valve Service of Baton Rouge, La., Smith passed his son, Jeff, on lap 12 and cruised to victory in the 23rd annual Shriners fund-raising event. Polesitter Jeff Smith fought off a fierce challenge by his father in the early laps before pitting with me- chanical problems. Once Freddy. was by Jeff, he led the remaining laps in his famous Bazooka Bass Tube number 00. Smith also won the Shrine race at Laurens Speedway on Tuesday night. John Pursley was second fol- lowed by Mike Duvall, Jeff Smith and Ken Rominger. BM Tim Fedewa dodged numer- ous wrecks and outran David Green to gain his first career Busch Grand National victory Sunday in the Meridian Advantage 200 at Nazareth, Pa. Speedway. After tak- ing the lead from Greene on lap 100, Fedewa led the remaining 100 laps in his Ford Thunderbird. Doug Heverson was second, fol- lowed by points leader Johnny Benson, and Jeff Green. David Green was fifth after running out of gas on the final lap. There were 11 cautions, elimi- Soccer camp set nating14 cars. Many of those still running at the end resembled modi- fied cars with much of the sheet metal missing. Sixty-two of the 200 laps were run under caution. The event was red-flagged once to remove wreckage from the track. After being forced into the wall and eliminated by another car, driver Jim Bown remarked, "These guys must be trying to top the Winston Select for wrecks." The top 10 leaders in the points standings after 10 races are Benson, Chad Little, Jason Keller, Fedewa, Phil Parsons, Rodney Combs, Larry Pearson, Mike McLaughlin, Terry Labonte and Jeff Fuller. BM Jeff Gordon won all three seg- ments of the Winston Select Saturday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Gordon collected $50,000 each for the first two 30- lap segments and $200,000 for the final 10-lap shootout for a total of $300,000. Gordon became the youngest in Kings Mountain The Cleveland County Soccer driver ever to win the all-star event. After winning the first seg- ment with ease, the field was in- verted placing him in the rear. In just 17 laps he was leading again in his Chevrolet Monte Carlo. He led all of the 10-lap shootout for a total of 49 of the 70 laps. The $1.3 million event is spon- sored by R.J. Reynolds. The format is designed for exciting full contact racing where anything goes. Fourteen drivers qualified for the 20-car field by winning races for the 1994-95 season. Darrell Waltrip qualified as an active driv- ing former Winston Cup champion. The top five finishers of a 50-lap Winston Open transfer to the all- star field bringing the total to 20 cars. The fans paid for excitement and they got it. The Winston Open had three cautions in the first 12 laps, eliminating six cars. The first segment of the Winston Select was without incident. On lap three of the second segment, Jimmy Spencer started the fire- works by knocking Ken Schrader into the wall. Seven laps later Dale Earnhardt, driving a Monte Carlo painted silver to commemorate the 25th anniversary of R.J. Reynolds, involvement in NASCAR racing, bumped Dale Jarrett from behind SCOREBOARD knocking him out of the race. Jarrett's spin sent Mark Martin, Jimmy Spencer and Todd Bodine into the wall. Earnhardt was able to continue to a third place finish. Before one lap could be com- pleted in the shootout, Earnhardt, going three-wide into turn three, banged into the side of Darrell Waltrip sending them both crashing hard into the fourth turn wall. Gordon wisely backed off, then drove low to avoid the wreck. Lake Speed and Bobby Labonte were al- so casualties of that wreck. Sterling Marlin was second, with Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace, Geoff Bodine, Bill Elliott, Robert Pressley, Mike Wallace, Jimmy Spencer and Brett Bodine rounding out the top 10. In a Sportsman race that preced- ed Winston Select activities, Shelby's Ronnie Sewell and Steve Clark finished fifth and 13th re- spectively. Both will compete in Sportsman events Saturday.
