Page-2B-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, June 1, 1995 Schools Briefs Cleveland County Head Start celebrates 30th anniversary Cleveland County Head Start re- cently celebrated its 30th anniver- sary with a musical program and picnic at Hollyoak Park gym in Shelby. The festivities began at 9:30 a.m. with Dr. Thomas Moore pre- senting a musical program for the 263 Head Start students along with little brothers and sisters, parents, staft and friends. Dr. Moore is a former assistant professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of Southern Mississippi at Hattiesburg and former coordinator of the NC Head Start Collaboration Project. He is a nationally recog- nized scholar, performer, and recording artist. He is a former host of his own television show and he travels extensively throughout the world conducting, performing, recording, and speaking to adults and children of all ages. Each Head Start child and staff member wore a T-shirt printed with the 30th anniversary message. Participants enjoyed a catered pic- * nic lunch following the parade. Other activities included a Reading Is Fundamental project with storytelling by Cleveland Memorial Library. Each Head Start child selected a book provided by the program to take home for the summer. Children also enjoyed pony rides and a petting zoo from Circle C farms and a clown from the American Red Cross. Head Start was begun in 1965 to help prepare children for school. Cleveland County Head Start be- gan operation as a summer pro- gram to give 225 disadvantaged youngsters a head start on prepara- tion for the first grade. The eight- week program began in the Shelby City School System. West teacher attends workshop Hilda F. Leonard of Kings Mountain, a kindergarten teacher at West Elementary School, recently attended a seminar at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching at Cullowhee. - “Leonard was one of 21 North Carolina teachers participating’ in { "Birds of the Blue Ridge: = NCCAT, a unit of The University of North Carolina, pro- vides a year-round series of inter- disciplinary seminars and other programs dedicated to advancing the art and profession of teaching. Mountain, was one of graduate from the L North » Carolina THOMAS School of Science and Math at Durham Saturday. NCSSM, which opened in 1980, recruits statewide and educates academically talented 11th and 12th grade students who show promise of exceptional develop- ment and/or special interest in sci- ence and mathematics. Over 3,000 students have com- pleted the school's curriculum, de- signed to provide the state with leaders in science, mathematics and technology. ‘all of Shelby. 2 n.% Knotts receives Jones Scholarship Clint Knotts, son of Ray and Carol Knotts, recently received the Pam Jones Memorial § Scholarship . from East 2G 0.1: d n.g.s Mountain. Fivhive $1,000 annual scholarship is offered to all graduating se- niors of the church. This year, each senior composed an essay entitled "A World in Trouble, A World in Turmoil, How Can I Help?" The recipient was announced during a special graduation banquet held at the church. The Pam Jones Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Pam Jones, a young church member, who lost her fight with leukemia on January 1, 1987. Knotts plans to work in the State of Wyoming during the summer. Upon his return to North Carolina, he will begin his pursuit of a de- gree in the construction field. County students graduate Gaston Cleveland County students will be among those receiving degrees at commencement exercises June 1 at Gaston College. Governor Bob Scott, former president of the North Carolina system of commu- nity colleges, will be the speaker. Cleveland County graduates in- clude Maribeth Briscoe Bagwell, Paul Brannon, Rita Richards Cathey, Debra Clayton, Kimberly Franklin, Jennifer Green, Kimberly Huffstetler, Katina Lary, Barbara Lawson, Jonathan McLeymore, Samuel McLeymore, Pamela Moss, Tamara Reid, Matthew Rikard and Matthew Stout, all of Kings Mountain; Doneita Dixon and Ronda Peeler of Lawndale; and Sid Hahn, James Martin Jr., Michael Millsaps, Deborah Ranck, Zarek Melton, Bobby Pyron Jr., Kelly Smith, and Myron Tessefieer)’ KNOTTS Ford earns degree from Limestone Judy Ford of Kings Mountain re- ceived her degree during the 150th commencement exercise at Limestone College. The commencement address was given by the President of South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, Art Bjontegard of Columbia. Classes scheduled at Cleveland College The Continuing Education Department of Cleveland Community College will offer an EMT Refresher Course and a Beginning Sewing class beginning in June. EMT Refresher begins June 15 and ends August 17. The class will meet each Tuesday and Thursday from 7-10 p.m. in cap;us room 2001. Cost for the 51-hour class is $35 and students can register at the first class meeting. Beginning Sewing begins June 19 and ends August 14. The class will meet each Monday from 6:30- 9:30 p.m. in room 2007. Cost for the 27-hour class is $35 and stu- dents can register at the first class meeting. For more information, call 484- 4015. Local students earn degrees at ECU Ten Cleveland County residents and a former resident were among 2,100 graduates receiving degrees at the spring commencement exer- cises at East Carolina University in Greenville. Graduates include William Potter Gheen III of Greenville, son of the late William P. Gheen Jr. and Carolyn McDaris of Shelby; Cristi Michelle Braun, Leslie Noel Green, Alison Cole Hannah, John Russell Hoyle, Susan Lee Price, Jonathon Levon Strong, and Shawn Webster Wright, all of Shelby; Melanie Dawn Crain of Lawndale; and David Alan Copeland and Charles William Hicks of Kings Mountain. Melanie Dixon named to Duke dean's list Melanie Heather Dixon, daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dwight Dixon of Kings Mountain, was named to the dean's list for the 1994-95 academic year at Duke University. To make the list, a student must achieve a 3.3 grade point average out of a possible 4.0.
