Labonte wins at Pocono
LONG POND, PA. - Terry
Labonte capitalized on teammate
Jeff Gordon's error to win the
UAW-GM Teamwork 500 at
Pocono Raceway Sunday. it was
Labonte's second win of the 1995
NASCAR Winston Cup season.
Gordon led 124 of the 200 laps
but missed a gear shift on a restart
with six laps remaining. Leading at
the time, he tried to get a jump on
the restart when his mistake caused
very high RPM's and engine fail-
ure, dropping him to a 16th place
finish.
Ted Musgrave finished second
with Ken Schrader, Sterling Marlin
and Hut Stricklin rounding out the
top five. Bill Elliott, Morgan
Shepherd, Dale Earnhardt, Michael
Waltrip and Brett Bodine complet-
ed the top ten.
Labonte started 27th but steadily
moved to the front group of cars.
Nicknamed "The Iceman" for his
cool moves on the track, Labonte
darted around Gordon's ailing car

Mounties to play in passing league
Kings Mountain High's new
football coach Ron Massey has
been on the job for just a week but
he and his staff and players are al-
ready working hard to make the
1995 season a successful one.
The Mountaineers went through
their annual three-day mini-camp
"last week, and now Massey is gear-
ing his thoughts toward entering
his offensive skill people and de-
fensive coverage people in a sum-
mer passing league against
Gaffney, Dorman and York high ~
schools.
Each Monday, Tuesday and
Thursday throughout the summer
the players will be in the weight
room, and full practice will begin
on July 31.
Massey, who turned out state
playoff teams at Raleigh Enloe and
Fayetteville 71st before signing on
with KMHS, said he was very

pleased with the turnout and
progress made in last week's mini-
camp.
"We had 52 to 62 people each
day (ninth through 12th graders)
and we accomplished more than I
thought we would," he said.
Massey said several other
Mountaineer hopefuls are involved
in summer basketball and baseball
and did not participate in mini-
camp.
"We had a group of parents that
fed us on Wednesday night and we
had a good meeting with them,"
Massey said. "I was happy. We got
a lot accomplished in three days."
Massey said Kings Mountain
and the three South Carolina
schools will play their passing
league on Tuesday, June 20 at 6
p.m. (tentative), and again on June
20 and 27 and July 11. Present
plans are to play all of the games in

Gaffney because it is the central lo-
cation among the participating
schools.
In a passing league, Massey said
each school takes its quarterback,
receivers and running backs and
they primarily run option plays and
throw the ball. Defensive players
participating are "cover kids" -
linebackers and the secondary.
Massey said competing in the
league will give the coaches an ex-
cellent opportunity to work on
passing and evaluate defensive per-
sonnel.
Massey said the teams will play
a round-robin format and the ses-
sions are open to the public.
Massey said the Mountaineer
coaching staff will attend the annu-
al North Carolina Coaches Clinic
in Greensboro the third week of
July, and then begin turning their
attention toward pre-season
