Obituaries
HARRY ROBERTS JR.
Harry Martin Roberts Jr., 73,
811 Margrace Rd., died June 20,
1995 at Kings Mountain Hospital.
A native of Gaston County, he
was a retired radiator and glass
company owner, a member of
Midview Baptist Church and a vet-
eran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Myrtle
Page Roberts; three sons, Ronny,
Benny and Vaughn Roberts, all of
Kings Mountain; two brothers,
Gene Roberts of Greenville, SC
and Paul Roberts of York, SC; and
four great-grandchildren. A daugh-
ter, Judy Mitchem, died in 1993.
The funeral was conducted June
23, 1995 at 2 p.m. at Midview
Baptist Church. Rev. Bob Hope of-
ficiated. Burial was in Mountain
Rest Cemetery.
MARY TIDWELL
SHARON, SC - Mary Wilma
Tidwell, 83, 1063 Highway 97,
died June 24, 1995 at her home.
A native of York County, she
was the daughter of the late
Thomas David and Mary Salena
Wilson Alexander, and wife of the
late Evan Tidwell. She was a
homemaker and a member of El
Bethel United Methodist Church,
Kings Mountain.
She is survived by her son,
Tommy Jack Tidwell of Kings
Mountain; her daughter, Dolly
Tidwell Davidson of Kings
Mountain; two brothers, Fred
Alexander of Clover and Tommy
Alexander of Kings Mountain; a
sister, Vera Hinson of Sharon; sev-
en grandchildren; 10 great-grand-
children; and three great-great-
grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted by
the Rev. David Greene Monday at
2 p.m. at El Bethel United
Methodist Church. Burial was in
the church cemetery.
HELEN JENKINS
GASTONIA - Helen Colleen
Moore Jenkins, 70, 2659
Providence Drive, died June 23,
1995 at White Oak Manor, Kings
Mountain.
A native of Preble County, Ohio,
she was the daughter of the late
Russell Moore and Zelma Sample
Moore Thompson. She was em-
ployed as Fulfillment Clerk for
McCall's Printing Company in
{ Dayton, Ohio, and she was a mem-
ber of Parkwood Baptist Church
where she was a member of the
Cunningham Ladies’ Sunday
School Class.
She is survived by her husband,
Earl Love Jenkins; a number of
nieces and nephews; two sisters,
Doris Zehler of Hamilton, Ohio,
and Loretta Wilson of Lincoln,
Mass.; half-brother, Don Moore of
Palatka, Fla.; and her step-father,
Shelton Thompson of Hamilton,
Ohio.
The funeral was conducted: by
the Rev. Ned Mathews Monday at
2 p.m. at Parkwood Baptist
Church. Burial was in Bessemer
City Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ronald, Harold
and Charlie Puckett, and Joe, Doug
and Mack Jenkins.

GEORGE F. WARE
CHARLOTTE - George F. Ware,
83, 1727 Oak Street, died June 23,
"1995 at Presbyterian Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County,
he was the son of the late John
Fletcher and Ursula. Ware Ware. He
was a resident of Kings Mountain
for 25 years and was retired from
the North Carolina Department of
Transportation. He was a member
of Central United Methodist
Church, Kings Mountain, and Otis
D. Green Post 155, American
Legion, Kings Mountain. He
served in one of the last horse cal-
vary units of the U.S. Army in
World War II.
He was preceded in death by his
son, Eric Ware, in 1976.
He is survived by his wife, Mary
Parker Ware of Charlotte; a broth-
er, Belvin Ware of Easley, SC; and
two sisters, Ruby W. Dixon of
Shelby and Margaret Wrape of
Burlington.
A graveside service was con-
ducted by the Rev. Harold
Schwantes Sunday at 3 p.m. at El
Bethel United Methodist Church
Cemetery, Kings Mountain.

Death still under investigation
County and state investigators
are continuing to investigate the
stabbing death of Charleen Simons,
50, who was found dead early
Wednesday morning at The Log
Cabin, a club she operated in her
home on S. Battleground Avenue
in Kings Mountain.
The fully-clothed body of the
woman was found in a chair be-
hind the bar by a passerby who en-
tered the club shortly after mid-
night last Tuesday night.
Results of an autopsy conducted
Wednesday at Gaston Memorial
Hospital revealed that the woman
died of stab wounds.
Grover Youth electrocuted at lake
GROVER - Jayson Flay "Leroy"
Whitworth, 17, of 2468 Brookfield
Dr., had planned his Fourth of July
vacation camping at Moss Lake.
Monday at 8:50 p.m. the 1995
graduate of Crest High School was
accidentally electrocuted as he ran
a drop cord from 110 Linden Drive
to the camper he was putting up on
the upper side of the lake.
"He was standing barefeet in wa-
ter and wet mud with no shirt on,"
said Coroner Ralph Mitchem.
"The high charge of electricity
killed the boy instantly."
Paramedics were called to the
scene and the boy was transported
Investigators were on the scene
several days last week and the area
is still roped off with yellow police
markings.
Neighbors at the scene of the
tragedy called Simons a friendly
person and a woman who was well
liked.
Simons had lived at the resi-
dence and operated the club for
several years.
Several people at the scene
Wednesday said they bought beer
at the club and listened to music at
the establishment on the weekends.
A band member said said Simons
to Cleveland Memorial Hospital
where he was pronounced dead on
arrival.
Whitworth's special project was
the Windjammers Toy Run for
abused kids in Cleveland County
and he participated each year.
He was the son of Randy Flay
and Donna L. Whitworth of Grover
and Faye and Dennis Peeler of
Fallston.
Also surviving are one brother,
Sean Whitworth of Shelby; one
step-brother, Kevin Mertz of
Grover; three step-sisters, Dawn
Mertz of Grover, Wendy Peeler of
Shelby and Lee Ann Peeler of
reported a break-in several weeks
ago.
The club is located outside the
Kings Mountain city limits in dry
Cleveland County in the city's one
mile perimeter area, a short dis-
tance from convenience stores
which have been satellite annexed
by the city.
Surviving are one son, Robert
MacLeod of Shelby; two daugh-
ters, Wendy Walls and Miley
Henderson, both of Shelby; one
brother, Robert Darling of
California; two sisters, Sharon
Chappel and Laura Vidal, both of
Michigan; and three grandchildren.
Lawndale; his grandparents, Floyd
and Juanita Whitworth of Grover
and James and Joyce Dover of
Shelby; his great-grandmother,
Carrie Philbeck of Shelby; and two
special cousins, Paul Michael
Benton of Shelby and Haley Neal
of Grover.
The funeral will be conducted
Thursday at 2 p.m. at Allen
Memorial Baptist Church. Rev.
Norris Willis, Rev. Ed Brown and
Rev. Doug Love will officiate.
Burial will be in Grover Cemetery.

Stop The Killing
vigil set Friday
A "Stop the Killing" candlelight
vigil will be held Friday at 7 p.m.
at Pine Manor Apartments in Kings
Mountain.
James Barnette, crusade director,
said that he will place the names of
victims of violence on a wall in
front of the housing complex and a
candle will be lit for each victim,
Last year Barnette put up the
names of 12 people who have died
of violence in Kings Mountain dur-
ing the period 1989-1993.
The memorial wall is located at
the Resource Center of the housing
complex on Charles Avenue.
