Repairs to a burst water main re- cently in downtown Kings Mountain will exceed $8,000, ex- cluding the cost of five to six mil- lion gallons of water that ran down the railroad tracks. Walt Ollis, Director of Water/Wastewater, said the bulk of the expense will be for overtime pay, to Jack Kennedy Concrete Construction for assistance in mak- ing repairs, and for parts. City workers spent 48 hours re- pairing the main at Battleground Avenue and Mountain Street. The water line broke just after noon on July 8 and poured mil- lions of gallons of water down the railroad tracks. Ollis said that crews worked more than 200 hours to make the repairs. The break was the result of the natural aging of the pipe which was installed in the late 1902's or early 1930's, according to Ollis. It is the oldest line in the city. "It could happen again but re- Dam repairs $125,000 Davidson lake dam repairs by the City of Kings Mountain cost upwards of $125,000 and are com- pleted. "Water will be coming back up as nature provides," said Water Supt. Walt Ollis. The lake is down an even ten feet. The repairs, mandated by the state, including building an emer- gency overflow spillway on the south side of the dam, reworking the face of the dam and installing concrete aprons around the pipes that actually formed the original spillway. ; Ollis said that some repairs will have to be done at the old City Lake but that the project has been put on the back burner. Originally the state had mandated that the City Lake repairs be done as quick- ly as possible. j Kings Mountain Weather Report (Compiled by Kenneth Kitzmiller) July 19-25 Year Ago Total precipitation 1.66 2.37 Maximum one day 98 (21) .88 (19) Year to date 35.44 36.19 Minimum temperature 69 (21, 23) 66 (23) Maximum temperature’ 96 (26) 89(19,21, 24, 25) Average temperature 80.7 78.1 Today, needing bifocals doesn't have to be a crisis.
