" First-year head football coach Ron Massey has been named athletic director at Kings Mountain High New principal Phil Weathers, who was interim ath- letic director last year, made the announcement today. He said it was a difficult decision because he had "some very good candidates" apply for the job. Massey, who came here as football coach in June af- ter a successful tenure at 4-A high schools Raleigh Enloe and Fayetteville Seventy-First, will oversee an athletic program which includes 20 sports and 294 ath- "The athletic program here is already outstanding," said Massey, "and if there's anything I can do to con- b and he Hopefully, there will be a Massey named athletic director good relationship. As far as the total athletic program, our goal is to field competitive teams that the school and community can be proud of. I'm sure there are some things I do that will be different from the past, but I hope all of that will be for the benefit of Kings Mountain athletes." Weathers said he has been highly impressed with Massey's work and his ideas since he came here in June. One of his first priorities was to improve the weight program and make changes in the locker room. "I think he's going to put some good things into place," Weathers said. "He's looking forward to the year, he's excited, and he's looking forward to working with the coaching staff here. The Monday night show will continue throughout the football season. White Plains Shrine Club to meet Thursday night A special meeting of the White Plains Shrine Club has been called for Thursday, August 24, at 7 p.m. at the Kings Mountain Family Restaurant at 100 West King Street. Volunteers are needed to help with the upcoming softball tourna- ment and the Bethware Fair Florida man killed in head-on crash in KM Adam Frank Butch, 80, ot Castleberry, Fla., was killed in- stantly Friday when his pick-up truck slammed into a van at 1:55 p.m. in Gaston County about a half-mile from the Cleveland County line a short distance from Kings Mountain. East has some very talented players and should be much better than last year's 5-5 record. The Cavaliers al- ways are big and strong up front and they have some good running backs. Quarterback is a question mark at present. 5 - South Point. South Point is in much the same boat as Kings Mountain. Johnson Jr., who investigated the accident, said it was unclear how Butch entered the eastbound lane but he apparently did not drive across the median. The Raiders have some good athletes, especial- ly on the line; they may just not have enough of them. If they avoid injuries the Raiders are a definite playoff contender. 6 - R-S Central. The Hilltoppers also have a new coach, Mike Mabry, and they have some talent- ed backs and linemen returning from last year's 6-5 team. Mabry can put a first unit on the field that can compete with anybody. Lack of depth will be his biggest problem. 7 - North Gaston. North Gaston will be much better than last year's 2-8 figure. Wildcat fans are excited about new coach Mike Briggs, who was an assistant on two state cham- pionship teams at Shelby and one state champ and one runner-up at Lincolnton. Briggs has dumped North Gaston's double tight end set for a wide open offense which could surprise some people. "We were lucky," commented Ollis about the four water breaks recently which left some areas of the city out of water for several hours. The major break was in the 72-year-old line on Battleground Avenue which sent millions of gal- lons of water down the railroad track and a break in the 22-year-old line on Crocker Road which dam- aged the road. "We got by for 20 years on a few breaks," said Guyton. But Ollis said the city had 30 fewer breaks last fiscal year but in the last month had fixed three ma- jor breaks and several minor ones. At our first faculty meeting during August, the group shared their experiences with our staff. Also, this summer two other teachers, Annette Parker and Sherry Bingham, attended the School to Work Academy. Ms. Parker and Ms. Bingham had the opportunity to work with different organizations in the area. They, too, shared their experiences with our faculty at our first faculty meeting.
