Bundy of Kings Mountain has enlisted as a mem- ber of the North Carolina Army National Guard. He is assigned to Company B(-) 505th Engineers in Kings Mountain as a food service specialist. Bundy, a senior at Kings Mountain High School, enlisted under a special program for high school seniors who are college bound that enables them to earn a paycheck while attending high school. Bundy plans to pursue his edu- cation after high school and will receive the GI Bill and other pro- grams. Bundy will receive his basic training beginning in July 1996 at Fort Jackson, SC, and receive is job skill training at Fort Lee, Va. He will then return to civilian sta- tus and continue his education. Jay Sloan enlists in National Guard John W. "Jay" Sloan III of Kings Mountain has enlisted as a member of the North Carolina Army National Guard. He is assigned to Ist Battalion 113th Field Artillery in Lincolnton as a cannon crewmember. Sloan, a 1995 graduate of Kings Mountain High School, will be trained on some of the most high- tech modern equipment in the Army. Sloan plans to pursue his educa- tion after training and will receive the GI Bell. He will also be eligible for other scholarship programs through the Army Guard. Sloan will receive his basic and AIT training beginning September 25 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He will then return to civilian status and continue his education. Sloan is the son of Rev. and Mrs. John W. Sloan Jr. Southern Gospel Sing at RS Central Sept.29 The first annual Southern Gospel Sing featuring "The Kingsmen" will be held September 29 at 7 p.m. at R . S. Central High School Auditorium in Rutherfordton. Special guests will be the Pine Ridge Boys, First Choice and Damascus Road. Pioneer Days Festival at KM State Park The life of the 19th century pio- neers who roughed out an exis- tence in the South Carolina wilder- ness will be celebrated in the Pioneer Days festival September 16 and 17 at Kings Mountain State Park. The festival also will feature Nell Jackson, a nationally recog- nized quilter from the Foothills Piecemakers Quilting Guild in Greenville. A selection of her quilts will be on display and she will put on a demonstration while talking about quilting history., The fee for the festival is $1 for adults and 50 cents for children. Tutoring School set at Good Hope Good Hope Presbyterian Church of Kings Mountain will begin its tutoring school September 11. Children in grades kindergarten through sixth grade may partici- pate. The school will be held each Monday and Wednesday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Rev. State Alexander is pastor. HONORED FOR SERVICE - Margaret '"Peggy' Jackson, who works with the Cleveland County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, was honored recently as one of the state's top eight Expanded Food and Nutrition Program assistants for 1995. Jackson won the award for opening 'the door to working with pregnant teens and young mothers in several high schools: and for breaking new ground in cooperating with the County Department of Social Services.
