RS
Kings Mountain Middle School's
football team was scheduled to
open the season Wednesday after-
noon at home against West
Lincoln. Coach David Heffner
takes his Patriots to Shelby next
Wednesday for a 5 p.m. game.
Heffner and his coaching staff
and players have been working
hard for three weeks installing a
new multiple I offense and 4-3 de-
fense, and he said they're looking
forward to playing against some-
body else.
"This year we're going to be in-
experienced because we have a
very young team," said Heffner,
who returns only three starters
from last year. "Since we're putting
in a new offense and a new defense
we're behind right now. But I'm
well pleased with the way the play-
ers have come along so far.
Heffner has a five-man coaching
staff for the first time in years.
Returning from last year's staff is
Maury Williams, who works with
the wideouts and linebackers.
Joining the coaching staff is former
KMHS player Monty Deaton who
is helping Heffner with the offen-
sive and defensive backs; Jerry
Ratchford, who is working with the
offensive and defensive lines; and
Tyler Harris, who is working with
the linebackers.
One plus for the Patriots is that
they have 58 players, and that
should help Heffner develop some
depth as he gets his players ready
to become future Mountaineers.
The line has good size again and
the backs also show promise.
"We have a good mix of seventh
and eighth graders," said Heffner.
"I'd say that most of the starters
will be eighth graders but because
we have so many players it will
take us a couple of games to see
who's going to play where. Our
lineup will change a lot."
Heffner's returning players from
last year are Eric Carroll, Josh
McDaniel, Torrey Cureton, Steven
Ray, Charles Perry, Jeremy Harris,
David George, Josh Camp,
Laymond Caldwell, Brian
Thornburg, Gerald Smith and
Dusty Hord.
New players are Torez Leach,
Kareem Odums, Stanley
Whitesides, Joseph Williamson,
Matt Ash, Dwayne Littlejohn,
