locals win in State Senior Games
Twenty-nine senior athletes from
Cleveland County participated in
the Senior Games State Finals in
Raleigh September 26-October 1.
Fifteen athletes won a total of 70
medals. Six state records were
shattered by the local athletes.
Vida Hester won the 500 yard
swimming freestyle contest.
Barbara Coxen won the standing
long jump.
Sherrill Jenkins won the softball
throw.
Hester Haynes won the softball
throw. Lonnie Proctor won the
shot put and one mile cycling
event.
Two of the state records, softball
throw and standing long jump,
have stood since the beginning of
the Senior Games in 1985. Lonnie
Proctor held the previous record.
Coxen's new standing long jump
record was 6 feet 4.25 inches.
Jenkins' softball throw was 122
feet 10 inches.

Bill Alexander, gold in 400 me-
ter dash; silver in 100 meter dash,
200 meter dash, 1500 meter race
walk and standing long jump; and
bronze for shotput and spincasting.

Mountain National Guard Armory
on Friday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. for its
Battle of the Belts Bloody Fight
Series '95.
The main event will feature an
over the top rope bunkhouse stam-
pede. The PWF tag team title will *
also be on the line when the Italian
Stallion and his mystery partner
battle the champions, Terry Austin
and Austin Steele, The Enforcers.
‘The PWF title will be up for
grabs when the champion Southern
Rocker is challenged by rule break-

Tyrone Knox. The feature bout of
the evening will be a man vs.

ings Moun ain running back Shane Logan gained 145 yards and scored the
winning touchdown on a 21-yard trap play as the Mountaineers defeated South Point 18-13 Friday night
at Belmont's Lineberger Stadium. Logan ran his season's rushing total to 744 yards and kept him on track
to become KM's first 1,000 yard rusher in 12 years. Logan and his teammates face their biggest challenge
of the season Friday at home when they battle defending state champion Burns.

New hours have been announced

School.
Lap swims are scheduled for
Monday through Friday from 6
a.m.-7:30 a.m. and 5-7 p.m.,
Saturday from 12 noon-1 p.m., and
Sunday from 1-2 p.m.
Opén swims are scheduled for
Saturday from 1-4 p.m. and
Sunday from 2-4 p.m.
The cost per swimmer is $2 for
lap swims and $1.50 for open
swims. Lifeguards are on duty.
G-W volleyball team
wins second straight
BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-
Webb's women's volleyball teem
won its second straight match
Monday night, stopping USC-
Spartanburg in five games, 15-12,
10-15, 15-9, 8-15, 15-11.
The Lady Bulldogs (8-9) were
led offensively by freshman setter
Kellie Williams who dished out 48
assists, many of them to juniors
Kristi Knox (17 kills) and Gina
McGee (12 kills).
Knox (20 digs), McGee (20
digs) and junior Regan Hensley (17
dig) led the G-W defense, frustrat-
ing the offensive effort of a tall
USC-S squad.
KM fall team
wins two games
‘Kings Mountain's; fall baseball
team won its fifth. consecutive,
game with a doubleheader sweep
over Gastonia. The victories im-
proved the team's overall record to
7-2.
In game one, Rusty Putnam
pitched a five-hitter while Jay Beck
and Darrin Putnam homered in the
7-5 victory. Trip Roark added two
RBI and Scott Martin had a double
to pace an 11-hit attack.
In the second game, Jeremy
Cooke pitched a four-hitter in the
11-2 triumph. Leading hitters were
Kendrick Bell with two hits and
Cooke with two runs scored.
This weekend, Kings Mountain
travels to East Lincoln on Saturday
and then plays at home Sunday
against Cherryville.
