Page 4B - THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD -Thursday, October 19, 1995 Oratorio Singers to present Messiah in Kings Mountain The Oratorio Singers of Charlotte will team up with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra on December 2 to present a spectacu- lar performance of Handel's Messiah in Kings Mountain. The performance, which Joan Laskey, Vice President for Marketing for the Charlotte Symphony, remarked will "be more of an event than just another concert" is scheduled for Saturday, December 2 at 8 p.m. at Barnes Auditorium on the campus of Kings Mountain High School. The Oratorio Singers of Charlotte, the city's largest and finest choral ensemble, began as the dream of a few singers and -their music director over 40 years ago. The vision in 1951 was an or- ganization for this city that would make performances of the great choral masterpieces possible. The dream became a reality in 1952 with the performance of Handel's Judas Maccabaeus by 68 singers at Meyers Park United Methodist Church, under the direction of Mr. Earl FE. Berg and sponsored by the American Guild of Organists. Today, the main chorus of 120 highly talented singers includes a professional core, as well as many volunteers who hold graduate de- grees in music. During the tenure of the director Mary Nell Saunders the organization founded a 32- voice chamber chorus and the 66- voice Charlotte Youth Oratorio Singers. Together these groups comprise the largest choral group in the Carolinas and perform ten or more different choral concerts each season for the Charlotte communi- ty. The text of the Messiah was written by Charles Jennens, a young English aristocrat and con- sists of passages from both the Old and New Testaments. Handel composed the oratorio especially for that text and it is the most fa- mous of the 26 oratorios that Handel composed. The oratorio was originally commissioned by the city of Dublin, Ireland and was See Messiah, 11-B COLVIN-FALLS From Page 3-B Groomsmen were Shane Stinnett of Huntersville, Chad Stinnett of Clover, SC, Shawn Colvin of Bessemer City, brother of the bride, Mike Hill of Columbia, SC, John Cole of Gastonia and John Yarber of Denver.
