Page 8A - THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD - Thursday, October 19, 1995 KM edges Burns 13-12 Kings Mountain's Mountaineers kept their state playoff goal in sight Friday night by defeating defend- ing state 3A champion Burns 13- 12 in a muddy Southwestern 3-A Conference encounter at KM's John Gamble Stadium. The victory, KM's first over Burns since 1989, gives the Mountaineers a 3-0 SWC record and 6-1 overall mark heading into a first place battle Friday night at Shelby. Burns dropped to 2-2 in the SWC and 4-4 overall. For the second straight week, the Mountaineers came from behind in the fourth quarter. Chris Wallace's second field goal of the night - a 19-yarder - gave the Mountaineers their 13-12 advantage with 3:20 re- maining, and then Coach Ron Massey's defense rose to the occa- sion to stop a Bulldog fourth and one attempt at the KM 32 with 32 seconds remaining. "This was a big win for our kids," said Massey. "I was happy for our kids to win this football game. When you beat a team the calibre of Burns and the tradition of Burns it has to be good for your program, and having to come back to beat them was even better." Both teams played well even though the muddy field hampered their offensive efforts. The Mountaineers rushed for 187 yards and hit 4 of 10 passes for 60 more, See Burns, 9-A Kings Mountain's Corey Jones (21) breaks loose on a 57-yard touch- down run in Friday's Southwest Conference game with Burns at Gamble Stadium. Shelby's line averages well over 250 pounds per man (and they have a couple of linemen in the 300-range), and is very quick.
