Library installs computer reference
Mauney Memorial Library now puts a world of information within
reach through a new powerful and easy-to-use computer reference system,
according to Librarian Rose Turner.
SIRS Researcher allows patrons to access up-to-date articles on a variety
of subjects. The system is flexible, allowing everyone from the novice to
the most experienced researcher to gain access to the information they
choose, according to Turner.
Turner said the cutting edge system consists of a database stored on a
iread-only compact disc and a computer work station making information
readily available by allowing a patron to use a keyword search function.
You simply type one or several words into the computer. The system then
‘compiles a list of articles containing those key words. You may choose to
view the full text or in a few instances, a detailed abstract of any articles on
the list. You may then decide to print the entire article or excerpts of the ar-
ticle or you may download the text to a floppy diskette. You can also find
articles through use of a title search or a subject heading search.
SIRS CD-ROM Researcher is updated twice a year with thousands of
: new articles. As the database grows, so will its value to students and re-
¢ searchers. The SIIRS database includes articles on a wide range of social
issues, plus developments and issues in science, economics, government
and international affairs - from over 800 publications in the US and abroad.
Many of these sources are not readily available in other formats, such as
periodicals obtained from China, Switzerland, Taiwan, Japan and
Botawana.
SIRS Inc. is a 20-year publisher of educational reference materials for
schools and public libraries. SIRS materials, available in print and CD-
ROM formats, are used in over 30,000 institutions worldwide.

New historical fiction at Mauney
Memorial Library:
Benstock, R.C. "Trees of Heaven"
(Soko Press, 1995).
The year is 1938, and the Japanese
Army has occupied Nanking. Kurodo,
a junior officer, has been left in charge
of a garrison town. When he come up-
on a starving, filthy Chinese woman
being assaulted by his soldiers, he res-
cues her and gives her his protection.
Li becomes his servant and a strange
intimacy because of circumstances en-
sues.
Buchan, James. "The Golden Plough"
(Farrar Straus Giroux, 1995).
Set in a divided Germany in the last
years of the Cold War, Buchan's grip-
ping literary thriller dramatizes recent
events with a rare depth of insight.
Carroll, Gerry. "No Place to Hide"
(Pocket Books, 1995).
Carroll brings back the heroes of
North SAR, and brings his Vietnam
War trilogy to its dramatic and moving
finale in an exhilarating tale of aviation
adventure that sets a splendid new
standard for new fiction.
Cooperstein, Claire. "Johanna; A
Novel of the Van Gogh Family"
(Schribners, 1995).
Contrary to popular belief, it was
not his brother Theo who saved
Vincent Van Gogh's paintings from the
trash heap. When Theo died six
months after Vincent, he left behind a
young widow, Johanna, a one-year-old
child, more than 200 paintings by
Vincent, and very little money. Johanna
dedicated the rest of her life to
Vincent's legacy. This is her story.
Gear, Kathleen. "Thin Moon and Cold
Mist" (Forge, 1995).
This is the moving portrayal of one
woman's struggle to stay one step
ahead of the law in a harsh world.
Gingrich, Newt. "1945" (Simon &
Schuster, 1995).
Join Speaker of the House Newt
Gingrich and fellow historian William
Forstchen, in a world that, save for
Hitler's inexplicable folly in premature-
ly declaring war on the United States
in 1941, would have been. Seduction
and betrayal, global strategy, secret
weapons of the Luftwaffe, the invasion
of England, desperate sea and air bat-
tles...
Gregory, Phillips. "A Respectable
Trade" (Harper Collins Publishers,
195).
Bristol, England, is booming in
1787, from its stinking docks to its ele-
gant new houses - a city where power
and wealth beckons those who dare to
take the risk. Once again Gregory com-
bines a vivid sense of history and inim-

itable story telling skills to illuminate a
complex period of England's past.
Powerful, haunting, intensely disturb-
ing, this is a novel of desire and shame
- of individuals, a society, and a whole
continent devastated by greed.
Haldeman, Joe. "1968; a Novel"
(William Morrow and Company, Inc.,
1995).
With intoxicating storytelling that
grips the reader, this is a searing and
compassionate drama that goes from
combat in Southeast Asia to the angry
protests in the streets of hometown
America, capturing a time of passion
and pathos, a moment when the forces
of history made their personal mark on
the loss of those who lived it.
Harris, Julie. "The Longest Winter"
(St. Martin's Press, 1995).
Harris has crafted a wonderful fic-
tional biography of John Robert Shaw's
life. His story is one of despair and
courage, tragedy and triumph.
Keneally, Thomas. "A River Town"
(Doubleday, 1995).
Based on real events in the life of
Keneally's grandfather, this novel takes
us back to the turn of the century. This
is the story of how a man triumphs
through compassion, of the heroism of
looking beyond a country's easy preju-
dices. Engrossing, funny, and touching,
it is vintage Keneally.
Kesavan, Mukul. "Looking Through
Glass"
This is a powerful and immensely
entertaining novel set in the troubled
1940s, the era of India's partition and
independence.
Mosby, Katherine. "Private Affairs"
(Random House, 1995).
In a dramatic story, a small southern
town in the 1920s becomes the stage
for a woman's poignant struggle to pro-
vide her life with far more meaning
and choices than fate has appointed
her.
Moss, Robert. "The Firekeeper" (St.
Martin's Press, 1995).
This book ranks with the enduring
novels about American history. Filled
with great men and with battles that
changed the course of history, the
Firekeeper is rich in the details of daily
life and human feeling. Deep in it runs

the river of a dream, a dream in which
the colonists and Native Americans
live in harmony and dignity, each en-
riched by the knowledge and power of
the other.
Oliver, Julia. "Goodbye to the
Buttermilk Sky" (Black Belt Press,
1994).
This is a beautifully narrated novel
of time and place, in particular their ef-
fect on one vulnerable but spirited
woman.
Peters, Daniel. "Rising from the Ruins"
(Random House, 1995).
Written both with irreverent humor
and a serious regard for Mayan history,
Historical fiction at Mauney Memorial Library
this highly original novel deftly blends
an archeological mystery with a pow-
erful story of personal redemption and
survival. It is a story about how we re-
ceive the past and how we recover
from it.
Price, Eugenia. "Beauty from Ashes"
(Doubleday, 1995).
This is the long awaited concluding
volume of Mrs. Price's Georgia
Trilogy. Again she leads us through her
South - by now an aching South that
will soon be torn by pain and pride,
driven by fierce principles and divided
loyalties, but always guided by men
and women of uncommon passion.
