FRANKLIN NEWTON 50th Weis anniversary for Mr., Mrs. Franklin Newton Franklin Riley Newton and Wilma Hawkins Newton of Gastonia were honored December 16, 1995 with a 50th golden wedding anniversary drop- in reception at Yellow House on South York Road in Gastonia. The reception was hosted by their daughters and sons-in-law, Terry and Steve Vickers and Pamela and Tim Watwood. The anniversary couple have one granddaughter, Lauren Watwood. Frank and Wilma were married in York, SC December 16, 1945. Newton is retired from the textile industry and Mrs. Newton is retired from a sales career. Entertainment at the reception was provided by Dale Brook with harp and piano and Danielle McBrayer, soloist, who sang "The Wind Beneath My Wings." Morgan Sellers o iS one year old Morgan Marie Sellers, daughter of Jody and Marilyn Sellers, was one year old Saturday, January 6. She celebrated with a party at her home. Born and raised in southern Alabama, Paula Larke has been performing since 1969. She was artist in residence at Cleveland Community College several years ago, and is well known for her techniques of interacting with her audience and for creating an inde- scribable, life-changing experience for young and old alike. & KM Librarian Paula's performances combine a variety of musical styles, from African-American spirituals and Caribbean and African music, to white mountain gospel, rap, jazz, and pop. She quotes from a variety of writers, songwriters, and poets, and issues a call to common sense and decency in human relations. The Library began programing for Black History Month last year, when Mrs. Faye. Webber was our guest speaker. The program was Americans throughout the month of February. We have an extensive collection of black history materi- als which covers not only historical perspectives, but also current is- sues and contemporary people. We are looking forward to a great month, with special recogni- tion of African Americans, their culture, and their contribution to our society. Dr. I Wonder Science Circus at KMMS "Dr. I Wonder's Science Circus" will be in residence in the three county school systems Thursday and Friday. Dr. I. Wonder - really Michael Frith of Sewanee, TN - whose spe- cialty is using circus arts to explain scientific theory, will perform Thursday at Burns Middle School at 9:30 a.m. and Crest Middle School at 1:30 p.m. Friday, he will be at Shelby Middle School at 9 a.m. and Kings Mountain Middle School at 1 p.m. Frith, author and performer, be- lieves that "the key that opens the conscious is comedy and surprise." He has performed at the Kennedy Center, Smithsonian, Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, the Spoleto Festival and the Strand Theatre in Boston, Mass. Frith's Dr. I. Wonder has also performed for sold-out audiences at the London International Children's Festival and North Canadian Children's Festival near the Yukon. The Science Circus has also performed at the Discovery Science Centers of Ft. Lauderdale, Little Rock, Costa Mesa and San Francisco, as well as the Children's Museum of New Orleans, Houston, and Bettendorft. As a founding performer of the Ben and Jerry's Traveling Show, Frith toured 30,000 miles over a three-year period in the USA as a variety arts performer and artistic director. The ultimate goal of the Traveling Show and its three-per- son variety arts team was to service the needs of young children across the country. This year has seen Frith work with country artist Marty Stuart on Michael's hometown state, the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, along with appearances on TNN's Wild Horse Saloon and The Marty Party. The programs in Cleveland County schools are co-sponsored by the Cleveland County Arts Council, Kings Mountain Schools, Shelby City Schools, and Cleveland County Schools. The project is supported in part by a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council. Sis Jones has earned the repu- tation as the good neighbor/Good Samaritan on Water Oak Street, cleaning off snow-covered porch- es and walkways for neighbors and taking bowls of hot soup to shut-ins.
