DEBBIE WELSH
Welsh is happy to be home
and working at The Herald
Deborah Welsh, Production Manager of the Kings Mountain Herald,
says if you haven't been to California you haven't missed a thing.
Welsh, who joined Republic }.ewspapers 2 1/2 years ago, got the travel-
ing bug but a few years ago and she and her family packed up and moved
to Georgetown, California and settled down in a small community of about
700 people.
Debbie quickly found a job at The Divide Harvester, a biweekly news-
paper, and learned about typesetting and ad composition through on-the-
job training by the newspaper owners, a husband and wife team who also
sold the advertising and wrote the copy for the paper which was circulated
in a wide area.
"California is a melting pot and it just wasn't the place to raise the chil-
dren and the schools don't compare with the good educational system we
have in Kings Mountain and North Carolina," said Welsh.
After 12 years in California, the family packed up and headed home - to
Kings Mountain.
A 1978 graduate of Kings Mountain High School, Deborah earned her
high school diploma through Gaston College. She went to work in a fast
food restaurant at the age of 14 but her real loves were homemaking and
jourpalism. At Kings Mountain High School she worked on the school
newspaper and wet her appetite for a career in the newspaper business.
“When we moved to California I met a friend who.had worked for The
Divide and I applied and loved the work but got homesick for Kings
Mountain," she said.
Her children, Bill, 13, a King Mountain Middle School student, and
Raquel, 10, a Bethware School student, love school and they and the whole
family are active in East Gold Street Wesleyan Church where their mother
joined when she was a teenager.
"I went to,church at the old church across from the American Legion as
a youngster and our family was always very active," said Welsh, daughter
of Betty Hudson of Grover and the late J. D. Ingle.
Welsh's job with Republic, which also owns the Bessemer City Record,
Cleveland Times, Cherryville Eagle and Banner News, is in the production
department.
"I coordinate from the Advertising representatives to the press room, set
some type, including classified ads, and paste up display ads," said Welsh
who worked in he dark room at The Herald for over a year shooting pic-
tures and newspaper pages.
Welsh likes to see her work look good for the readers to enjoy and often
she would shoot a picture more than once to assure that the photograph
would not be dark when it came out in the paper.
"I like the people I work with and I take pride in my work as we all do
here,” she said.
Welsh is Kings Mountain and Grover's number one fan. She loves the
area.
"North Carolina is the top choice of many people moving from such far-
away places as California but I just hope they don't settle in our area,” she
says of the small community she enjoys.
Linda Holland and her son, Caleb Beach, play in the snow at their
honje on East King Street. Caleb, who will be six in February, built a
sngwman, topping him with a baseball cap and red woolen scarf. The
fapfiily dog watches as Caleb takes a bite of the snowman's face.
