Dual Airbags ar KM family to get home from Habitat When Esther Davis and her fam- ily move out of Chesterfield Apartments this summer they will occupy the third house built in Kings Mountain by Habitat for Humanity. But Mayor Scott Neisler, who is co-chairman with Wilfred Smith of Cleveland County's Habitat for Humanity, says more homes are needed. "I'd like for the communities of Shelby and Kings Mountain to run a contest, a build-a-thon to see who’ can build the most homes for peo- ple who need them," said Neisler, who said that Habitat volunteers and the Davises will build a new three-bedroom home on Cook Circle on city-donated property. Two Habitat homes are current- ly occupied on Tracy Street in Kings Mountain which brings the total to six in Cleveland County. Neisler said that the Habitat board met Sunday after interview- ing applicants and chose the Kings Mountain family, which includes four children and a grandchild who are now residing in Chesterfield Apartments on Margrace Road. The mayor said the applicant met strict income requirements. The applicant must be employed, must have an income of at least four times greater than the average $150 house payment for a Habitat home but no more than seven times greater. "It's really a matter of the situa- tion the person is in," said Neisler. Neisler estimated that the house can be built for $25,000, although the most recent homes were built for about $19,000, he said. "Moneywise we are in good shape to get started on the new Habitat house as soon as the weather shapes up," he said. ‘95 MUSTANG #6-TA-1 #6-TB-6 MSH. i: 18,830 #5-M-33 MSRP... sini, 16,475 . ie Micron Air Fi Power Windows & Locks Ford ert Co *Aluminum Wheels Ford Discount... ; AT i Ar Piney Speed & Tilt sFactory Air Ford Rebate... The mayor has been a longtime ‘supporter: of Habitat. and has helped build: the Cleveland County homes and was instrumental in getting the city properties for Habitat. City officials wanted to donate the property .outright but because: it was city owned-the. parcels had to be ‘advertised on the open market for 10 days. City Council had picked: two parcels but during the process learned one of the parcels had been purchased by Hubert Toney about two weeks before the donation was made. The city then selected the Cook Circle property and started the donation process again. Councilman Phil Hager proposed stipulations to the agreement which other members of Council support- ed. In order to preserve property values iin the Cook Circle neigh- borhood the home must be at least 1,000 square feet with a carport at- tached. The entire structure would also have to be brick veneered to blend in with other homes in the area. Neisler and Smith had planned a -build-a-thon between Habitat vol- unteers from Shelby and Kings Mountain. A lack of funds and.a shortage of qualified applicants postponed those plans temporarily, said the mayor.
