Home for Girls, Artist-in-
Residence for Wilmington, and
founder/director of a wide range of
community-based programs. Since
1987, Grear has been a full-time
professional performing artist. She
tours, nationally and international-
ly, most of the year but takes time
out to make films.
Grear chose Mary McLeod
Bethune as a subject for one of her
one-woman shows because
Bethune is listed among Great
Women in American History.
Bethune was an educator who de-
voted her life to changing the so-
cial conditions and educational as-
pirations of her fellow African-

for freedom and educational oppor-

She was the founder of a school
which became Bethune-Cookman
College and was also the founder
of the National Council of Negro
Women. She served as special ad-
visor to four USA Presidents, start-
ing with Franklin Roosevelt whose
wife Eleanor was a close friend of
hers. She was president of the
Florida Federation of Colored
Women, president of the National
Association of Colored Women, di-
rector of the National Youth
Administrations Division of Negro
Affairs, vice-president of the
NAACP, special assistant to
Secretary of War Stimson, and an
appointee to President Truman's
Committee of Twelve for National
Defense.
