Paula Larke is all of these and more, and she will perform at the Josephine E. Weir Auditorium at Mauney Memorial Library on Thursday, February 1 at 7 p.m. The program will kick off a month long emphasis on black his- tory and culture as we re-examine the role of the African American in ROSE | TURNER| @ KM Librarian our national development. Born in South Alabama, into a family with a rich tradition in story telling and music, Paula has devel- oped her own repertoire of stories and songs to reflect the African- American heritage and its place in our culture. Taking the stories of her youth and moving on into the broader world, she has fashioned a unique blend of folklore and con- temporary culture which conveys the essence of life and our relation- ship to the world and to each other. Services provided will include training opportunities for both parents and providers, assistance in locating age-appropriate child care services and ongoing education and technical assistance to ensure quality child care options in Cleveland County; the provision of consulting services to day care providers and families regarding risk factors for developmental disabilities, normal child development, behavior management, environmental enhancement and programming for children of all ability levels; the continuation of quality enhancement programs through opportunities for increased provider educational offerings, reduced staff turnover, improved early childhood experiences and learning environments, and assistance in moving to higher standards of quality as measured by licensure or accreditation; the provision of early childhood education services, including opportunities for inclusion of children who are at risk for developmental delay and with special needs, to targeted children birth to age 5 residing in Cleveland County; the development of a project promoting business/ industry collaboration with the Partnership for Children to identify, publicize and financially support the development of model child care settings which demonstrate quality care for children birth to age 5; the provision of drop-in/substitute child care in Cleveland County. Services will include providing replacements for absent care givers in organized child care settings and provision of drop-in child care for special events; the development of an educational initiative for the purpose of promoting culturally sensitive, age appropriate programming for children birth to age 5 and their families in Cleveland County. Such an initiative must develop and implement cost effective, easily replicated educational activities which can be delivered in a variety of settings; the provision of subsidized child care for children birth to age 5 whose families meet income eligibility and -guidelines established by the Board of the Partnership for Children. the continuation and expansion of the Neighborhood Team to assist interested neighborhoods in identifying and accessing desired services which will benefit children and families; RFP# 202 203 204 205 206 301 302 303 304 305 306 the implementation of a computer based One-Case management system to track family services and provide coordination among various agencies; the continuation and expansion of Parents As Teachers, a home-based parent education program designed to help parents give their children the best possible start in life and lay the foundation for later success in school and other areas by promoting the health and mental health of young children birth to age 5. This project will also include the provision of a Welcome Baby program to present new parents with a basket of information on community resources along with other newborn items; the continuation of Case Management Services to victims of domestic violence; the continuation and management of seed money grants to communities for the establishment and continuation of family resource centers; the continuation of Emergency Services to provide funds to families (with children birth to five) who are facing emergency situations that prevent them from working or going to school, or providing for the health and welfare of their children. the continuation of the immunization and well-child care initiative targeting children birth to age 5 in Cleveland County. the development of transition information including a plan for distribution, targeting four year olds who are ready to enter kindergarten in the coming school year. the development of a public education initiative to focus on a child’s readiness to learn, include developmentally appropriate practices, health and safety information and parenting skills targeting children birth to age 5. the development of a creative arts initiative to provide cultural enrichment age appropriate activities for children birth to age 5. the continuation and enhancement of structured learning opportunities accessible to children birth to age 5, their families, and child care providers. the provision of health and developmental screenings at community based sites for children birth to age 5.
