First-year Coach Monty Deaton's Patriots ended their sea- son with a 10-4 record and third place in the conference. A 26-point third quarter outburst broke a 19-19 halftime tie and sparked the KM victory. Brad Short scored eight of his game- high 15 points in the third period, and Brian Houze and Shawn Adams each scored all eight of their points in the third quarter. Qwenshon Goode added 10 points. In the hurdles, Bumgardner should have two of the top per- formers in the conference in Daniel Gardner and Shane Logan. Both made it to the regionals last year and Logan was a state qualifier. Newcomers Anthony Ash, Lee Barnes and Landon Benton also look good. State qualifiers R.J. Barnes and Corey Jones head a good group of sprinters. Jones was seventh in the state in the 100 meters last year and Bumgardner predicts he will be in the top five this year. Chad Reid, Cedric Smith and Marcus Smith also return. Newcomers in he sprints are Joseph Bell, Vernus Bell, Lewis Brown, Alex Burris, Ron Feemster, J.W. Garner, Lance McClain, T.J. McClain, Thomas McClain, Tario Campbell, David Turner and Kevin Young. Bumgardner expects the Mountaineers to be very competi- tive in the relays. "The kids seem to be working real hard so far," said Bumgardner. "We started practice on February 12 and we had a couple days of bad weather but we've done pretty good. We just have to keep focused and improve a little every week." Neisler named Orioles scout Kings Mountain's Hayne Neisler has been named an assuage, scout by the Baltimore Oriole¥ baseball club. Neisler's territory includes west- ern North and South Carolina. His responsibilities with the Orioles will begin March 15. Neisler is one of 14 new associ- ate scouts hired by new scouting supervisor Kevin Malone. Neisler has been active in Kings Mountain youth baseball and is president of the Babe Ruth organi- zation in Cleveland County. JV Mountaineers edge Hilltoppers Kings Mountain High's JV boys basketball team ended its season last week with a 67-62 victory over R-S Central. Marlon Byers scored 21 points to lead the Mountaineers of Coach Aubrey Hollifield. Joseph Bell added 17 points, six steals and three assists, Kelee Thompson had eight points and seven rebounds, Ty Toney five rebounds and three steals, and Kendrick Bell three as- sists. KMHS sports fete Monday, March 11 The Kings Mountain High School winter sports banquet will be held March 11 at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Tickets are $7 and may be pur- chased at the school office or at the door. Randy Dorman of Manning, SC won the event with a catch of five bass weighing 24 pounds, 15 ounces. He collected $4,600. A to- tal purse of $19,090 was divided among anglers finishing in the top ten. Seawright caught five bass weighing 19 pounds, 6 ounces and collected $730. Eaker caught five bass weighing 18 pounds, 7 ounces and won $416. Softball, baseball registration to end Registration for youth baseball and softball programs sponsored by Kings Mountain Recreation Department will end Friday, March 8.
