Page 2A Obituaries THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD GERTRUDE CHAMPION Gertrude Ledford Champion, 82, 933 Oak Grove Road, Kings Mountain, died June 18, 1996 at her home. A native County, she was the daughter of the late Cleophus and Essie. Padgett Ledford and wife of the late Lyman Edmond Champion. She was retired from Kings Mountain District Schools and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, © Kings Mountain. She is survived by her son, Carl W. Champion of Kings Mountain; three daughters, Betty Thornburg, Della Bell and Darlene Jimison, all of Kings Mountain; a brother, Clarence Ledford of Bessemer City; two sisters, Eleanor Kiser of Bessemer City and Dolly Carpenter of Lincolnton; 13 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Ron Caulder Thursday at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. BLAIR WILLIAMS Blair Williams, 19, 138 Quail Hollow Drive, Kings Mountain, died June 12, 1996 at Brunswick County Hospital from injuries suffered in a jet ski accident. A native of Gaston County, he was the son of Joe and Teresa Hammett Williams of Kings Mountain. He was a member of First Baptist Church, a student at Gardner-Webb University, and an employee of Preparation Machinery in Kings Mountain. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, Greg Williams of Kings Mountain; paternal grandmother, Evelyn Williams of Gastonia; and ma- ternal grandmother, Pearl Hammett of Kings Mountain. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Bully Williams of Gastonia, and his maternal grandfather, Booty Hammett of Kings Mountain. The funeral was conducted by Dr. John Sloan and the Revs. Morris Jordan and Shane Doty Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. KEVIN GREEN Kevin Alexander "Alex" Green, 2 days, 106 Anderson Acres, Kings Mountain, died June 12, 1996 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. A native of Gaston County, he was the son of Kevin Wayne Green and Sherri Lynn Bridges of Kings Mountain. He is also survived by his pa-* ternal grandparents, Larry and Joanne Green and Tony and Teresa Ruppe of Kings Mountain; maternal grandpar- ents, Michael and Susan Bridges of Kings Mountain; pa- ternal great-grandparents, Raymond and Coleen Gettys, Gaynelle Ruppe, Keith Goodman and Bessie Green; and maternal great-grandpar- ents, Ken and Lucy Anderson, and Mary Helen Bridges, all of Kings Mountain. A graveside service was con- ducted by the Rev. Bob Little Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery. HARVEY HULLENDER Harvey M. Hullender, 65, 520 Cleveland Avenue, Kings Mountain, died June 17, 1996 in Wendover. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Nicholas. Winfield and Bertha Aberty Hullender. He was retired from Nations Machine Shop in Gastonia. He is survived by his wife, Betty Graham Hullender of Kings Mountain; a son, Robert "R.W." Hullender of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Master Sgt. Paulette Hullender of Tinker AFB, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Debra Hullender Grigg of Shelby; two sisters, Oledia Dise and Buena Summerford of Shelby; seven grandchildren and one great- grandchild. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. James Hamrick Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Harris Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 201 West Marion Street, Shelby, NC 28150. of Cleveland BILL WATTERSON William Monroe "Bill" Watterson, 76, 1320 Crestview Drive, Shelby, died June 16, 1996 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. : A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late John D. and Bessie Grigg Watterson. He was the retired owner of Bill's Sandwich Company and was a U.S. Navy of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He was a charter member and deacon at Church Drive Baptist Church, was a member of the Shelby Lions Club for 35 years, was a member and past president of Gideons International for 25 = years, and was a Melvin Jones Fellow of the Shelby Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Myra B. Watterson of the home; son and daughter-in-law, William B. and Carol S. Watterson of Banner Elk; daughter and son-in-law, Melinda W. and Phil Evaul of Waynesville; brother, Hood Watterson of Grover; grand- sons, Eric S. Watterson of Springfield, MO and Brian J. Evaul of Waynesville; grand- daughters, Kelly W. Barber of Charlotte and Amanda M. Evaul of Waynesville; great- grandsons, Levi K. Watterson and John Monroe Watterson of Springfield, MO; and great- granddaughter, Rachel D. Watterson of Springfield, MO. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. John Hunter and Phil Evaul Monday at 2 p.m. at Churchill Drive Baptist Church. Burial was in Cleveland Memorial Park. HAMRICK Kenneth A. Hamrick, 52, 113 Sage Road, Earl, died June 12, 1996 at his home. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Zennie Bowen Hamrick of Earl and the late Buford E. Hamrick. —.. He was retired from Number Three Egg Producers. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Kenny Wayne Hamrick Sides of Grover; brothers, Benton Hamrick, Ray Hamrick, Harold Hamrick and Floyd Hamrick, all of Rock Hill, SC, and Dennis Hamrick of Earl; and sisters, Ethel Bowen of Escondido, CA, Patricia Hamrick of Earl and Nancy Ledbetter of Shelby. He was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Hamrick. . A graveside service was con- ducted by the Rev. Kevin Sloop Friday at 2 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery. JACK H. GUNNELLS Jack H. Gunnells, 68, died June 8, 1996 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. A native of Kings Mountain, he was the son of the late Lela Gladden and Robert Gunnells of Kings Mountain. He was also preceded in death by his broth- ers, Clarence B. Gunnells and Peter S. Gunnells. He graduated from Kings Mountain High School. He re- ceived his BA in Business from Lenoir Rhyne College and his MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill. As a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, he served four years in the U.S., Italy, Germany and Austria. Mr. Gunnells was Personnel Director at UNC-Chapel Hill from 1970-1990 when he retired. He was a life member of the UNC General Alumni Association, President of the UNC MBA Club, a member of the UNC Educational Foundation, Rams Club Board Member, and Secretary of the Rotary Club, a lecturer in the now, Kenan-Flagler Business School, director of the Carolina Service Program in the University Relations Division, a founding member/Retiree, Chairman, District 25, State Employees Association of N.C. (SEANC), and was a Life Member of Sons of Confederate Soldiers. A graveside service was con- ducted at 11 a.m. June 12 at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Davis Gunnells; one son, John Gunnells of Carolina Beach; one sister, Juanita G. Blanton of Kings Mountain; one brother, James G. Gunnells of Mississippi; and one grandson, Jack Aaron Gunnells of Clinton. Memorials may be made to the U.N.C. Women's Golf Team. ABBIE W. HARRIS Abbie Wall Harris, 82, 921 Sharon Drive, Kings Mountain, died June 11, 1996 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. A native of Mt. Olive, Mississippi, she was the daugh- ter of the late Rev. Dr. Zeno and Ada Kate Ramsey Wall. She was the widow of the late Senator J. Ollie Harris who died in February of this year. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Yates Wall. Mrs. Harris served as Secretary and Treasurer of Harris Funeral Home, Inc. and was a member of Kings Mountain Baptist Church. She attended Limestone and Coker Colleges where she majored in Piano. Mrs. Harris is survived by her son, John O. Harris Jr. of Nassau Bay, TX; daughter, Becky Harris of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Rev. Woodrow Wall of Shelby and Zeno Wall of Sevierville, TN; sister, Ada Wall Fanning of Blowing Rock; grandchildren, Elizabeth Harris, David Hambright, John O. Harris III, and Kathy Blanton; and great- grandchildren, Phillip Carter and Jada Blanton. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Olin Byrum Friday at 11 a.m. -at Kings Mountain Baptist Church. Box 608, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. EVA HANNAH Eva Cobb Bishop Hannah, 76, 407 Chestnut Street, Kings Mountain, died June 12, 1996 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of Gaston County, she'was the daughter of the late James Daniel and Bertha Birchfield Cobb and wife of the late Loyd Hannah. She was a retired textile worker and a member of Oak View Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, James Daniel Bishop of Shelby; six daughters, Jessie Mae Timms of Winter Haven, FL, Kay Frances Sprouse of Shelby, Bertha Jane Bishop of Clover, SC, Brenda Mae Campbell of Cherryville, and Viola Myers and Patricia Evon Mull of Kings Mountain; four brothers, Dewey Cobb, Herman Cobb and Floyd Cobb of Kings Mountain and Jack Cobb of Rock Hill, SC; two sisters, Viola Stroupe of Kings Mountain and Eula Mae Wiggins of Hendersonville; 22 grandchil- dren, 38 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchil- dren. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Ralph Sparrow Friday at 3 p.m. at Oak View Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Parsons given 30-day leave City Finance Director Maxine Parsons was granted a 30-day medical leave recently by inter- im City Manager Gary Hicks. Hicks said Parsons’ request for a leave met the require- ments of the Family & Medical Leave Act of 1993. He said he considered the re- quest of Parsons' medical doc- tor from Boiling Springs and granted medical leave to Parsons until July 8. He said the maximum entitlement under FMLA is 12 weeks in a 12 month period and if more leave time is required after July 8 that new medical certification will be required. Mrs. Parsons was present at the recent special meeting on the budget. Councilman Jerry Mullinax questioned why she was working. Is this legal?" Mullinax asked Hicks. : “Maxine volunteered to help out on the budget," said Hicks. » Mullinax asked why he didn't know that Parsons was on med- ical leave and Hicks said he thought he had called each Council member.
