Bolin's Day Care holds graduation The 18 graduates of Bolin Day Care presented the pro- gram at the first graduation cer- emony June 10 at First Wesleyan Church. They opened the ceremony by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and sang two songs, "I'm Somebody Special” and "We're Going To A Mansion." Five-year-old Jason Price, son of Gordon and Wanda Price, sang the solo, "Jesus Is The Answer," and joined the group in "Go Rest High On That Mountain." The graduates wore royal blue caps and gowns and were presented diplomas, a New Testament Bible, and a treat bag. ; Ellen Bolin, owner, was hon- ored with a plaque recognizing 16 years of "outstanding child care." Rhonda Bolin, the class teacher, was also presented a gift. Refreshments were served af- ter the program in the church fellowship hall. Art exhibition set at Cleveland College The Shelby Art League's 22nd Annual Juried Artists Exhibition will be held October 25-November 15 at the Arts Center at Cleveland Community College. Stephen Wicks, Curator at the Knoxville Museum of Art, will ‘serve as juror. Cash awards to- taling $4,000 will be presented Ormand reunion July 27 at Old Furnace The 99th consecutive annual reunion of the descendants of James Ormand (1669-1766) will be heldzat noon on Saturday, «<July 27; at the site of the Old Furnace on Long Creek Road between Bessemer City and Kings Mountain. The Ormand Reunion is also known as the "Old Furnace Picnic" and ranks among the oldest consecutive reunions in America. Preparations are being made for next year when the 100th reunion will be held with many special events. Around 200 relatives take a picnic lunch and gather each year for the reunion, traveling from all over the United States. Rev. Ben F. Ormand has per- to the winners. Works are limit- ed to original paintings, draw- ings, and sculpture completed in the past two years and not previously entered in a Shelby Art League show. Accepted works must be UPS shippable or hand delivered. Recently Ormand and Betty Thornburg have been working on a revision and ex- pansion of the Ormand History to be available next year at the Centennial reunion. James Ormand ‘and his son settled on land from the Catawba River to Long Creek, granted to them in 1754 by George II, King of England. An iron furnace was erected on a portion of the property on Long Creek Road around the time of |Kings Mountain Senior Calendar 3 and the entry fee is $15 for up to three slides. Application is also being con- sidered for including it in the National Register of Historical Places. A booklet on the history of 'The Old Furnace" will be available at the picnic this year. Summer socials - Socials will be held Friday, July 21, Saturday, August 3 and Friday, August 16. Admission to each social is a suggested $3 dona- tion. Refreshments are provided at the Saturday dances, but on Fridays everyone is asked to take refreshments, cups, plates, napkins and spoons. Anyone needing transportation should call Linda King by noon Wednesday prior to each social. The Center normally has a so- cial on the first Saturday and third Friday of each month. ‘There will not be a Saturday dance in July because area se- nior adults will have a picnic at Crowders Mountain State Park. For the Friday, August 16 so- cial seniors will enjoy a Hawaiian luau. The Ordinaries will provide the music. All se- niors are urged to dress Hawaiian-style. 55 Alive - A 55 Alive course, sponsored by AARP, will be held September 24-25 from 12 noon-4 p.m. Participants must attend the entire 8-hour semi- nar. The only requirement for the course is that participants must be a licensed driver and be 50 years old or older. The cost is $8 and includes work- book and materials. Some in- surance companies offer dis- counts to adults who take this course. Pedicures/manicures - A new volunteer, experienced in the area, will begin giving pedi- cures or manicures the second Wednesday morning of every month from 9 a.m.-12 noon. Persons age 60 or older can make an appointment by call- ing Carolyn Bell. There is no charge. Operation Cool-off - The Senior Center has fans to loan to area senior citizens. Call or go by the Center to get a fan. Advisory Board - The Senior Center Advisory Board will meet Tuesday, July 23 at 12 noon at the center.
