Give 'Em Hell, Harry! set at Belmont Abbey The Abbey Players/Belmont Community Theatre will begin its 1996-97 season with Give 'Em Hell, Harry!, a witty cele- bration of the life and times of President Harry S. Truman, August 22, 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. in Haid Theatre on the Abbey campus. Ken Harmon plays Truman in this one-man show. Other productions this season include Man of La Mancha Sept. 26-28 and Oct. 3-5 at 8 p.m., and a 2:30 matinee on Sept. 29; Arcadia on Nov. 14-16 and 21-23 at 8 p.m., and Nov. 17 at 2:30; Antony and Cleopatra Feb. 20-22, Feb. 27-28 and March 1 at 8 p.m., and Feb. 23 at 2:30; Sweeney Todd April 17-19 and 24-26 at 8 p.m. and April 20 at 2:30; and The Boys Next Door May 29-31 and June 5-7 at 8 p-m. and June 1 at 2:30 p.m. Single and season tickets are available. Christmas in July underway in county Christmas in July, an effort to help Cleveland County children who are in need of assistance, will be held through August 14. Back-to-school supplies, per- sonal hygiene products, and new underwear and socks for children are being collected. Donation boxes are at K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Roses, Kings Mountain Baptist Association, and all First National Bank of- fices. The project is sponsored by Shelby Headline News and Time Warner Cable of Shelby. Donations will benefit Children's Homes of Cleveland County (James' Home and Shelter Home), Salvation Army, and the Kings Mountain Baptist Association Services Division. Cyclists ride to beach to fight Multiple Sclerosis On September 14-15, nearly 1,500 participants in the 1996 MS 150 Bike Tour will pedal over 150 miles to benefit the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. The two-day bicycling adven- ture leaves on Saturday from Rockingham and Columbia, SC, and will finish in North Myrtle Beach, SC on Sunday. Participants enjoy a fully catered, fully supported route. Volunteers provide rest stops every 6-10 miles complete with food and beverages, support and gear vehicles, bike mechan- ics, and medical personnel. The MS 150 has raised more than $20 million annually while attracting 100,000 cyclists na- tionwide. To learn more about MS call 1-800-FIGHT MS. Outdoor gospel sing at Cleveland College There will be an outdoor gospel singing Saturday, August 10 at Cleveland Community College amphithe- ater, 130 South Post Road, Shelby. The program will fea- ture recording gospel groups from Shelby, Charlotte and Statesville. Battle of the Bulge sets annual reunion The Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, Inc. will hold its an- nual reunion in Hyannis, Massachusetts, September 8-11. A memorial plaque will be dedicated to all who served in the Battle of the Bulge. The memorial will be unveiled by Mrs. Jean E. Gavin, wife of General James M. Gavin, who was the youngest commander of an American division - the 82nd Airborne - one of the over 400 units who served in the Battle of the Bulge. For further information, write to VBOB, P.O. Box 11129-P, Arlington, Virginia 22210-2129. Sloan Goforth serves as Governor's Page Warren Sloan Goforth of Kings Mountain recently served as a page with the Governor's Page Program in Raleigh. He is a senior at Kings Mountain High School and is the son of Tommy and Kathy Goforth. Goforth spent the week of July 8 providing clerical and ad- ministrative support as a page in the governor's office. "It's exciting to see such bright and energetic high school students like Sloan interested in public service," Gov. Hunt said. "This program gives our young people a chance to learn about state government first-hand, and I hope the experience will encourage these students to be- come future leaders in their communities and in our state." The Governor's Page Program is designed to moti- vate young people to become interested in state government. Pages are assigned to various Awareness in Crime Prevention Award in 1994 from the Gaston Chapter of Las Amigas for sin- cere dedication and service to the youth of Gaston County. Bess is an active member of Vestibule A.M.E. Zion Church in Kings Mountain. She current- ly serves as Assistant Treasurer of the church, and she also serves on the Steward Board, Senior Usher Board, Stewardess Board Missionary, Life Member Association, Lay Council, and the Church Van Committee. Masonic Lodge BBQ, yard sale September 7 Kings Mountain Masonic Lodge will hold a barbecue and yard sale Saturday, September 7 : Barbecue chicken will be sold from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The cost is $6 per plate. Cleveland Count bloodmobiles set Sandi Bolick, Director of Blood Services for the Cleveland County Chapter of the American Red Cross, has announced the following blood- mobile schedule: August 6 - Shelby Presbyterian Church, 1:30-6 p-m., goal 50 pints. 22 - Beaver Dam Baptist Church, 3-7:30 p-m., 50 pints. 26 - YMCA, 11 a.m.-4:30 pm, 20 pints. Summer socials - Socials will be held Saturday, August 3 and Friday, August 16. Admission to each social is a suggested $3 donation. Fund raiser - The Senior Center will have a fund raiser - Saturday, September 14 to raise - money to purchase a lighted sign for the front of the Center. . Operation Cool-off - The Senior Center has fans to loan to area senior citizens. Call or go by the Center to get a fan. Shelby man enlists in National Guard Tracy C. Hannon of Shelby has enlisted as a member of the North Carolina Army National Guard's 505th Engineer Battalion in Kings Mountain as a 63] (Quartermaster and Chemical Equipment Repair). He will receive his basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC be- ginning October 2. After basic training, he will go to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland to receive job skill training. Under a special program he will receive college credits dur- . ing his National Guard training, . and will also receive the G.I. Bill for reservists and a special tu- ition assistance from the state of North Carolina to attend col- lege.
