A native of Kings Mountain, he was the fourth son of Clarence S. and Ellen Patterson Plonk. He was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church. He received his early educa- tion in Cleveland County Schools and graduated from Kings Mountain High School. He attended N.C. State University. He was a charter member of Kings Mountain Lions Club. He served as an ASC Community Committeeman. He was named a Merit Award Winner in the Conservation Awards Program in 1993 and served on the North Carolina Farm Bureau Field Corps Advisory Committee.
