Page 6A g(homecoming) 8 p.m.; i Sports Briefs THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD TA SY A BG PASE August 1, 1996 KM football practice begins this afternoon Kings Mountain High School will begin football practice on Thursday, August 1. : Head Coach Ron Massey said the coaches will meet with play- ers at 5:15 p.m., and practice will begin at 5:30. The Mountaineers will go through six days of condition- ing drills before beginning heavy practice on Friday, August 9. Massey said he plans an intrasquad scrimmage on that Friday night at 6 o'clock. Practice will begin at 5:30 p-m. for the week of condition- ing, except for the Saturday ses- sion which will begin at 8:30 a.m. Beginning Monday, August 12, practice will begin at 4 p.m. Massey, beginning his second season as head coach, said he expects at least 70 JV and varsi- ty players to report on the first day of practice. He said all players must have a completed physical before beginning prac- tice. East Lincoln will come to Gamble Stadium on Friday, August 16 at 7 p.m. for a scrim- mage, and the Mountaineers will compete in the Gaffney Jamboree Friday, August 23 at 7:15 p.m. at Gaffney against Dorman. The Mountaineers open their regular season on Friday, August 30 at East Gaston and will play their first home game on Friday, September 6 against Crest. Kings Mountain finished sec- ond in the Southwestern 3-A Conference last season and qualified for the state playoffs for the first time since 1989. Only two teams from the SWC will qualify for the state play- offs this year. KMHS Booster's Club still needs members The Kings Mountain High School Booster's Club July membership drive was a big success, and the club will hold another drive at its August 5 meeting at B.N. Barnes Auditorium. Prospective members are urged to be at the lobby of the auditorium at 7 p.m. to join the club. The regular meeting be- gins at 7:30. The following memberships are available: $10 - One individual mem- bership with voting privilege. $25 - One individual mem- bership, parking pass, and vot- ing privilege. $50 - One individual mem- bership, parking pass, KMHS cap, and voting privilege. $100 - One individual mem- bership, parking pass, KMHS cap, one all-sports pass, and voting privilege. Membership cards will be given out at the September meeting. Refreshments will be served. Per Visit « Sales Tax Not Included LOOKING TO SECOND SEASON - Kings Mountain High foot- ball coach Ron Massey, whose team compiled an 8-3 record in his first season last fall, hopes for another successful campaign in '96. His Mounties begin preseason practice today at 5:30. Season football tickets on sale A season pass for Kings Mountain High's five home football games this fall is on sale at the KMHS office for only $20. The pass guarantees a re- served seat in front of the press box. Kings Mountain has a strong home schedule this year, in- cluding games against Crest, Mooresville, South Point, Shelby and East Rutherford. In addition to the football sea- son pass, the Mountaineers are selling all-sports season passes for $50 each. That entitles free admission to all home games in every sport. To purchase a football or all- sports season pass, see Sandra Bumgardner in the KMHS main office. KMHS soccer practice to begin on August 5 #%%K ings Mountain High School goeger practice will begin Monday, August 5 at 5:30 p.m. All players must have a com- pleted physical on an approved physical form. Forms may be picked up at the KMHS office. Swimming, tennis lessons at KM P&R Kings Mountain Parks and Recreation Department is offer- ing swimming and tennis lessons to the general public. Motocross racing slated at Cleveland County Fair The Cleveland County Fair will host motocross racing August 30, August 24, September 7 and September 26 (opening day of the fair). There will be 23 classes and participants range from age 4- 50. Gates open at 6 p.m. and rac- ing starts at 7 p.m. Parking is available in the college parking lot. Spectators will enter at gate #1 at the water wheel. Tickets are $6 adults, $3 chil- dren 11 and under, and free for adults age 74 and over and chil- dren age 4 and under. KM women golfers win in Foothills event Six women from Kings Mountain Country Club com- peted in the Foothills event July 23 at Pine Island Country Club in Mt. Holly, and all six came back home winners. Kim Spicer was second low gross and Sylvia Neisler was third low gross in the first flight. In the second flight A, Nikki Pilgrim was second low gross. In second flight B, Janet Tate was third low gross. Susan Cloninger was third low gross in flight three B, and Doris Howze was third low gross in flight six A. Mickey Church Memorial Junior Golf Championship will be played Monday and Tuesday, August 5-6, at River Bend Golf Club near Shelby. Plaques will be presented to the winner, runner-up, and third place in each division. The tournament will be stroke play. Divisions include: Boys 9-under, nine holes Boys 10-11.-.Nine holes each day from yellow tee markers. Boys 12-13 - 18 holes each day from red tee markers. Boys 14-15 - 18 holes each day from white tee markers. Boys 16-17 - 18 holes each day from white tee markers. Girls 13-over - 9 holes each day from red tee markers. Girls may also compete in the boys divisions. Eligibility is contingent upon residence within Cleveland County, and not having had the 18th birthday before August 7, 1996. Entry fee is $15. Buddy Smith winner at Carolina Speedway Buddy Smith continued his winning ways in the late model feature Saturday at Carolina Speedway in Gastonia. Finishing second through fifth were Jimmy Galloway, Dale Lineberger, Chris Sutton *Biolage | “Cssentials *Paul Mitchell i *Vovoom Wolff Tanning System and Dale Matherly. Joe Robinson won the Thunder and Lightning divi- sion, followed by Mike Messer, Billy Thompson, James Messer and Junior Hughes. Barrett Bradshaw won the Super Stock, followed by Barry Mathis, Mike Adkins, Shawn Martin and Jim Patterson. Gregg Barker edged Jim England in the Modified 4's. Teresa Matherly was third, Bobby Laughter fourth and Fred Robinson fifth. Jason Conner won the Street Stock A Main, with David Lester second, Charlie Rhinehart third, Robert Lane fourth and David Gillian fifth. Kevin Berkley won the Street Stock B Main. Robbie Mauney was second, followed by Paul Sparrow, Shane Stokes and Jerry Jackson Jr. Shannon Barnhill won the Stock 4, followed by Marc White, Jeff Crump, Junior Pitman and Bobbi Michaels. Duvall problem keeps Weeks in victory lane For over half the race, it ap- peared Mike Duvall had what it takes to keep Ricky Weeks out of victory circle Saturday night at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC. But Duvall's car lost its rear end, and Weeks assumed the lead and roared on to his fourth straight win. Paul Croft finished second, followed by Billy Scott, Bill Morgan, Joe Littlejohn, Jab Owens, Chris Drye, Dan Ivey, Dan Breuer and Mike Duvall. Duvall and Petey Ivey won heats. Billy Bishop led Wally Fowler once again in Thunder and Lightning action. Warren Pettit, Earl Davis and Lance Creaseman completed the top five. In Limited Sportsman action, ‘Lamar Jordan held off Todd Revis for the win. Third through fifth were Tony Pierce, Tim Clayton and Barry Duncan. Kyle Davis won his second straight Modified Four race over Scott Tessner, Randy Evans, Charlie Walker and Ryan Owens. Corky Fleming led Russell Willowford in Stock Four ac- tion.
