SHERWOOD Sherwood found himself in business. 3 From Page 1-A stories about how homework could not be completed because the student had to work late. Sherwood does not want to keep his employees from get- ting an education that will someday help them. A graduate of Michigan State University, he taught the maths and sciences at the junior high level. He also coached football and baseball - two of his child- hood loves. From there, he traveled to St. Charles, which is right outside of Chicago, and taught for a few more years. Afterwards, he found himself in the printing business that he would stay in- volved with for 17 years before coming to own his own McDonald's. The McDonald's venture did not come easy to Sherwood. Becoming an owner of a store required much time and work - he actually had to work in a McDonald's Restaurant in order to purchase one. He put in 1,000 free hours. One thing led to another, and Today, he says he coaches an- other sport - team management. A man who dedicates much of his free time to civic organi- zations such as Smart Start, Rotary, Kiwanis, and Partnership for Children, Sherwood cares about the fu- ture of his employees, as well as the children in Cleveland County, which is where he wants to retire. His employees usually get to- gether for an annual softball game and Christmas party, and have rap sessions to vent out any sort of frustrations. At the present moment, the restaurant is planning a Back- To-School program in which teachers from various schools will come to the restaurant for one evening and serve the stu- dents food at half price. The money the teachers make will go directly to the school and be used to the school's discretion. "I don't want to build an em- pire," said Sherwood. "I just want to do a good job with the stores I have and provide an op- portunity for kids."
