6A Herald Sports Thursday, September 19, 1996 eee. WESTERN Mountaineer special teams, defense shine in 58-11 victory over Bessemer City Friday Kings Mountain's explosive offense has gotten a lot of rave reviews this football season, and deservedly so, but the spe- cial teams and defense were just as explosive in Friday's 58-11 nonconference victory at Bessemer City. The kicking team and defense either scored or set up six of KM's eight touchdowns, and the defense tacked on a safety as the Mountaineers ran their record to 2-0-1 and handed the Yellow Jackets their third straight loss. The Mountaineers are idle this week and will use their ex- tra week of practice to heal some wounds and begin preparing for their September 27 homecoming game with Mooresville. Bessemer City stays at home Friday to play a strong Maiden team. Kings Mountain coach Ron Massey said he talked to his players all week about getting on top of Bessemer City early. He said he didn't want the game to be close in the third and fourth quarters and see BC's home field advantage kick in. The game was close only about as long as it took the opening kickoff to be fielded by the Yellow Jackets. Kings Mountain's kick coverage team rushed down field hard and knocked the ball from the grasp of return man Jerry Hatten. Without breaking stride, KM's Joseph Bell caught the ball on a bounce and ran 18 yards into the end zone. Rusty Putnam's PAT made the score 7-0 just 10 seconds into the contest. Bessemer City's only good drive of the night came after the ensuing kickoff as the Jackets marched down field to score on a 44-yard field goal by quarter- back James Bane. Bane connect- ed on both of his pass comple- tions during that drive - 11 yards to Hatten and seven to Ron Thompson - and Bane and big fullback Bryan Sanders took turns running the ball. MOUNTIE ON A ROLL - Kings Mountain reserve quarterback Anthony Ash (12) rolls around end on an option keeper for a big gain in Friday's 58-11 win over Bessemer City at the BCHS field. Ash carried the ball six times for 77 yards and scored a touchdown. The Mountaineers are idle this week and return to action next Friday night at home against Mooresville in their homecoming game. Dixie Youth team beats Mauldin Kings Mountain's Dixie Youth baseball fall team ran its record to 2-0 Saturday with a 9- 3 victory over Mauldin, SC. Alan Gibson picked up his second win of the season by pitching four innings of three- hit ball with five strikeouts. Evan Ellis got the save by pitch- ing the last three innings. Leading hitters were Clint Falls and Brad Goforth with two hits each. Josh Patterson and Mike Rote both had RBI doubles. Kings Mountain will play Simpsonville, SC Saturday and East Lincoln Sunday. BC's only other first half points came on a safety when KM's center snapped the ball out of the end zone on a punting attempt.
