CARE A Ps Page 8A THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD ~ QUARTERBACK KEEPER - Kings Mountain quarterback Greg Jarvis (12) keeps the ball on an 6. FOOTBALL From 6-A ing block of a would-be tackler by T.J. McClain. BM A four-yard run by McClain, set up by his own 42- yard scamper on an option keeper around right end. HM A six-yard sneak by reserve quarterback Anthony Ash, set up by Bell's fumble recovery at the BC 24. The second half started off much the same way as Bell re- turned the kickoff 80 yards to the BC one yard line. From that point Jones scored to make the score 56-5. The Yellow Jackets got their final touchdown in the third quarter when lineman Nick Ledford scooped up a fumble and raced 50 yards into the end zone. And, the Mountaineers tacked on a safety when they tackled Hatten in the end zone in the fourth quarter. ~ "We had talked all week about getting out on top early," said Massey. "But we didn't an- ticipate jumping out quite that much. But we were happy to see that." The Mountaineers were just one point shy of the school record of 59 points in a season option run around right end in Thursday's JV game with Gaffney at Gamble Stadium. KM won 12- game - set four years ago in a 59-0 bashing of East Gaston - and they could have easily topped that mark. But Massey took advantage of the mis- match to get all of his players into the game. In fact, the Mountaineers had the ball for only 35 running plays - 20 by reserves. KM's starting backs - McClain, Jones and Smith - carried the ball only 15 times and combined for 177 yards. The reserve backs includ- ed one (Garner) who was seeing his first action of the year, and another (reserve linebacker Toby Sims) who had not been in the backfield since last year when he was on the JV team. "It was good to get every- body in the game," Massey said. NOWHERE TO GO - Kings Mountain's defense swarms Bessemer City running back Jerry Hatten (7) for a big loss in Friday's nonconference game at Bessemer City. The Mountaineers stung the Yellow Jackets 58-11. KM is idle this week while BC entertains a tough Maiden team. The Mountaineers, 1-1, travel to Maiden Thursday at 7 p.m. Kings Mountain took a 6-0 lead on its first offensive play when Cornelius Matthews re- turned a Gaffney punt 60 yards for a touchdown. The Mountaineers missed a couple other scoring opportuni- ties in the first half, twice driv- ing inside the Gaffney 15 before losing the ball. The Mounties coughed up a fumble late in the first quarter, and the halftime clock ran out on their other drive. Gaffney tied the score at 6-all in the third quarter on a 36-yard touchdown run by Joseph Wood. : The Kings Mountain defense held Gaffney on downs at the KM 40 midway of the fourth quarter, and the Mountaineers drove for the winning touch- down. Anthony Hillman scored from 13 yards out. "It enabled us to look at some kids who'll be playing for us next year and to evaluate them a little bit. That was a positive aspect of it. We had some kids who were a little banged up so we didn't have to call on them to play the entire game. "But it was a little tough knowing that we have an open - date this week," he added. "You really want to get a good game in before an open date." Massey said he was pleased with all aspects of the Mountaineers’ game. "The special teams did a real good job with the exception of the safety on the snapped punt,” he said. "We had our sec- ond snapper in there and it was just a tough situation for him to come into. Fortunately, it was not a critical situation. The next one he snapped he did a real good job. "The special teams set up sev- eral of our scores, and we scored twice on special teams so we felt real good about that. "I felt like it was a good over- all effort. We had a couple of big plays, and the offensive line did a great job of blocking and getting us in the open, and tak- ing advantage of what they were giving us."
