October 3, 1996 THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD Page 7A Mountaineer kickers upset Lions, lose to Raiders Kings Mountain High's soc- cer team pulled one big upset, but came up shy in an attempt for another, in Southwest 3-A Conference action during the past week. Last Wednesday night in Shelby, the Mountaineers scored their first win in four years over the Golden Lions, 4- 2. Monday night at home, they took an early 1-0 lead over de- fending SWC champion South Point but the powerful Red Raiders came back to post a 4-1 win and run their record to 9-0. Coach Dan Potter broke with tradition on last week's trip to Shelby. Instead of going directly to Blanton Stadium, he took his Mountaineers to Graham Middle School for warm-ups. They arrived at the Shelby High stadium about three minutes before game time and went di- rectly onto the field. "Over the last three years we had been real intimidated and lost by some wide margins over there," he gave as his reason for arriving right at game time. "This time we just went to our positions and played, and the guys were much more focused and did a real good job." Wesley Bridges scored on an assist from Daniel Tedder 7:30 into the game to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead. Shelby battled back to tie it, but Bridges scored again to put the Mounties on top 2-1. Shelby came back to tie the game 2-2 at halftime, but the: KM defense shut the Lions down after that. "We went into the half a little disappointed because we came out so strong and they respond- ed," Potter said. "WE spoke about a few things, and then Coach Conrad Martin gave a great Vince Lombardi speech and got the guys pumped out. We went out and took it to them in the second half." Daniel Tedder and Robin Perkins each scored a goal in the second half to give KM the margin of victory. Kanya Phaengkahamhak played an outstanding defensive game against Shelby's best player, shutting him out. Monday night, Tedder scored off an assist by Perkins and Jordan Angeles 11 minutes into ON THE RUN FOR MOUNTIES - Marcus Smith finds some running room for Kings Mountain's Mountaineers in Friday's homecoming game with Mooresville at Gamble Stadium. On the first play, McClain took a couple of steps to his left on an option play, cut back across the grain and went untouched into the end zone with the winning touchdown. Massey said he was confident the Mountaineers' defense could stop Mooresville because it had shut down the Blue Devils' offense most of the sec- ond half. "I felt like our defense was playing well," he said. "If we could pin them down close they'd be limited in what they could do. We were fortunate we: held them down deep and felt like we could get good field po- sition." He also praised McClain for a "good athletic" play on the touchdown run. "We had been running the option with some success getting outside and pitching it," he said. "They had a slant on and were going to take the outside away. Lance saw the seam and cut back against the grain." Although he said he felt the Mountaineer offense should have been more consistent, Massey said it was good that they were able to make the plays they had to. "It was fortunate for us that we did," he said, "because we were able to win the game. I guess to be successful you have to win games that you don't play well in." Massey refused to blame the off night on the open date from the week before, or homecom- ing. "I don't want to make excus- es," he said. "We just don't know if the kids didn't feel like Mooresville was as good as they were or not, but we didn't play with much intensity. . "It was nice to win our home- coming game," he continued. "I think playing at home helped us. If we had played that bad on the road I don't think we would have come away with a victory. We've just got to put that be- hind us because these next six ball games determine whether or not we make the playoffs." defensive end Derek Goode, who broke his collarbone on the first play of the game last week. Otherwise, except for the usual bumps and, bruises, Massey said the Mountaineers should be in good shape physically. "We played a decent first half," said Potter. "We had sev- eral other scoring opportunities, as they did, but Collin Goforth made some really key saves for " us. South Point took a 2-1 lead early in the second half on a penalty kick and then broke the game open late. "South Point is an excellent team,” said Potter.
