October 24, 1996 Fletcher promoted to sergeant Kings Mountain policeman Thomas Fletcher, promoted re- cently to sergeant, hopes to eventually move into criminal invéstigation and then into the role of Chief of Police. Chief Bob Hayes announced Fletcher's promotion and his as- signment as leader of Patrol Squad C which includes patrol- men’ Wayne Carpenter and Tony Reeves. A rookie officer will be added to the crew in the near future. Fletcher is a native of Boone - where he graduated from Watauga High School in 1986. He served four years as a Naval Air Crewman in the U.S. Navy, flying 1,223 hours as a crewman on P3-C Orion. He received his basic law en- forcement training at Mayland Community College in Spruce Police Report Ya Pine, and worked 1 1/2 years with the Avery County Sheriff's Department prior to moving to Gastonia in 1992. He joined the KMPD in November '92. He is married to the former Jennifer Bolin of Gastonia, and they have a 12-week old daugh- ter, Haleigh Christine. Mrs. Fletcher teaches at Page Elementary School in Belmont. Fletcher said he started his KMPD career as a patrol officer under James Camp, and later worked under Patrol Sgt. Melvin Proctor. He assumed duties as a Senior Patrol Officer in February of this year. "I hope to eventually move into criminal investigation," he said. "I think I would enjoy that. And I hope to move into ad- ministration and one day take over as chief of police." Cars operated by Mary Faile Hargett, 111 Lady Lane, and Amy Mitchem Goode, 239 Branchwood Circle, hit at the Highway 74 West Off Ramp at North Piedmont Avenue. Damages were estimated at $400 to the Goode vehicle. Hargett was cited for safe move- ment violation. OCTOBER 14 A 1987 Volvo operated by Dan Joel Thomas, Route 3, rolled into a 1986 Mazda truck operated by Richard: Abshet, Waco, atthe’ stop’ sign at the Off ramp to the US 74 Bypass. The truck bumper was damaged $300. OCTOBER 15 A 1986 Hyundai operated by Betty Louise Stamey, 200 Spruce St. Apt. 2A, struck a 1988 Honda oper- ated by Gail Scism, 422 Chestnut Ridge Rd., at a railway construction site at S. Railroad and West Mountain. No one was hurt. Estimated damages were $1900.
