Page 10A : Commissioners to lease property Cleveland County Commissioners approved the lease of 14.789 acres of county property to Elizabeth Elementary School Tuesday night at the regular meeting of county commission. The land request, made October 8 by School Superintendent Earl Watson, asked for use of the land behind the school since the North Carolina Department of Transportation plans to widen Highway 180 to five lanes in front of the school, thus leaving the school with minimal space for other projects. Watson noted in a letter to Manager Lane any future expansions (play ar- © eas, ball field, etc.) would need to be built behind the existing school." A new driving, park- ing and stacking area behind the school will take up the . space that presently serves as a * ballfield. ; The North Carolina . Department of Transportation - plans to create an entrance/exit to the south end of the school, according to Watson. Also in . the plans are a stoplight at the entrance. Upon making a motion for the lease, Commissioner Ralph Gilbert said he was all for help- ing out Cleveland County Schools. However, he said, "Their always asking the county to give them land," saying that when they are given land they never give the county the first right of refusal when the land is no longer needed by the school. The motion to lease the land to the school at a nominal cost MOSS From Page 1-A tended NCSA summer session. She said after that she became totally focused on acting, drama and dancing. She rented an % apartment on the East Side and uquickly realized that things © happen "very fast" in New York. :. Landing the role on "Another “fWorld" is proof of that. Just a “day -earlier, she had been of- fered the part of Ismene in the ‘play "Antigone" in Cleveland, Ohio, and Buffalo, NY, and as she spoke by phone she had just returned home from an early- morning audition for a Neil Simon play in Manhattan and was getting ready to go out for TENTS VEEEENTY PET to the school carried. Terms of how long the lease is for are in- definite, but County Manager Alexander said he thought the school would probably be inter- ested for the existence of the school. County Commissioners also voted in favor of these Health Department budget amend- ments in the areas of public health nursing services for: Kings Mountain District Schools - expanded health ser- vices for Kings Mountain Middle School, and expanded services for Kings Mountain District Schools/High School. Kings Mountain District Schools will be charged $12,000 for these services. Shelby District Schools - ex- panded health services for Shelby High School, expanded health services for Shelby Middle School, and school nurse services. The total charge of these services will total $55,691 with $23,000 being al- lotted for an additional school health services being provided by the health department, as well as for the annual salary of $32,691 for the public health nurse. The salary includes fringe benefits. Countywide programs - ex- ceptional children's program, expanded health services for Burns and Crest High Schools, and school nurse services. Total invoice for these services will render $82,254 with $31,369 be- ing allotted for the school nurse position, and $50,885 allotted for a physician extender posi- tion. These salaries include fringe benefits. ping stone. ‘I'm going to use it as that - three years for me to learn and get experience in front of a cam- era, to be around people I've never been around before, and kind of have a different family," she said. "It's an opportunity to learn and continue to grow and sharpen my skills as an actor so I can do a lot of different things which I feel I'm capable of do- ing." Because she is so grateful to and proud of her family and Kings Mountain, she said she will use her own name "Laura Moss" as her stage name, if pos- sible. "There are certain guidelines," she said. "A name is like a patent. If someone has patented it, nobody else can use it. I'll have to join several actors unions. I'll find that out in a few days. As far as I know, I won't have to change. If I do, I'll prob- ably just drop my first name and use my middle name, Beth. I wouldn't want to change my name." No doubt, many Kings Mountain people who haven't been soap fans in the past or have favored other shows will be tuning into Laura and "Another World." THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD BACKING A WINNER - Martha Turner showed her support for President Clinton and Vice-President Dole outside Grover Town Hall Tuesday. ELECTION From Page 1-A County with 10,319 and 9,673, respectively, and Libertarian Mark Seiler of Bessemer City with 968. On the state and national lev- els, there were very few surpris- es. President Clinton easily won reelection over Bob Dole and North Carolina's senior Senator Jesse Helms successfully held off Harvey Gantt for the second time. Ninth District U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick easily defeated Mike Daisley with over 62 percent of the vote. Myrick, who made stops all over Cleveland County during the campaign and returned to Kings Mountain Tuesday to work the polls, said she was es- pecially grateful to*the voters'in this area. "Gaston and Cleveland County have been so good to me and I very much appreciate if," she said. "I'm very, very gratified." Myrick said despite the Republicans’ defeat in the Presidential race, she feels en- couraged because the GOP con- tinued to run strong in House and Senate races. "I'm encouraged because we're going to continue to bal- ance the budget," she said. "We have a good shot at getting a constitutional amendment now with the extra vote in the Senate, and we on the House side are going to push for that. "Also, I really think we will start to deal with the tax situa- tion. So many people have ex- pressed interest in getting rid of the income tax and starting over. I see some healthy discus- sion and hopefully some re- sults." Governor Jim Hunt won an unprecedented fourth term, re- ceiving over 57 percent of the” vote in his race with former Rep. Robin Hayes. Hayes served two consecutive terms from 1976-84, lost a U.S. Senate bid against Jesse Helms in 1990, and was elected governor again in 1992. Area voters went along with the state in overwhelmingly ap- proving the $1.8 billion school facility and $950 million high- way bonds issues. Kings Mountain Schools will receive $6.1 million for new and/or renovated schools. Kings Mountain Supt. Bob McRae said the vote is "evi- dence that people support pub- lic schools and want children to have the best that we can af- ford."
