Thinking the man would not fire at him and hoping to snatch the pistol, Hayes, six foot six, dashed 20 yards through the darkness, lunged at the suspect and slipped on the wet grass. "And bam, bam, bam he started shooting," recalled Hayes. The officer was shot three times-be- low the neck and once in‘the right shoulder. Being a police officer is a job if you plan to be good one, Hayes tells his staff on a regular basis. But the Chief is the first to ad- mit that the gun and the badge don't mean the same to every- one.
