Page 6A Mountaineers beat Blacksburg, but lose to York in North-South Kings Mountain's Mountaineers split their two games in the Carolina State Bank North-South Doubleheader Thursday and Friday at the KMHS gym. The Mountaineers blew away 1-A Blacksburg 73-38 Thursday night but fell to York 59-58 Friday when the Cougars’ Josh Davis canned a 3-point field goal with just seven seconds re- maining. Alex Burris's 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed for the Mountaineers. The split with the South Carolina teams leaves the Mountaineers of Larry Sipe with a 5-4 record in pre- Christmas play. The Mountaineers open Southwest 3-A Conference play at R-S Central on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Fourteen of KM's 15 players scored in Thursday's easy win over Blacksburg. Ironically, the only player who did not score for the Mounties was their lead- ing scorer, Marcus Smith. Coach Sipe welcomed the op- portunity to get everyone in the game because he plans to go at least 11 men deep in most games this year. The Mountaineers were led in scoring by Burris with 11 points and David Turner with 10. Travis Burris scored 11 for the Wildcats, all of them coming in the first half. The Mountaineers’ height ad- vantage and quickness were too much for the young Blacksburg team. The Mountaineers got off to a cold shooting start but stayed ahead most of the first half because of their full-court pressure which forced numer- ous Blacksburg turnovers. Kings Mountain held only a 15-12 edge after the first period but increased the lead to 30-19 at intermission and 49-30 going into the fourth quarter. B Kings Mountain led most of the game Friday before York came back strong in the end to win. The Mountaineers were out front 19-14 at the quarter break, 31-29 at intermission and 47-41 going into the fourth quarter but were held to only 11 points in the final eight minutes. THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD prme— Dedric Anderson led the Cougars with 25 points and Ali Patton added 12. Marcus Smith and Alex Burris scored 13 points each and Jawan McCree and Marlon Byers added nine each for the Mountaineers. HM Bessemer City also split its two games in the North-South, losing to York 56-40 Thursday and defeating Blacksburg 63-41 Friday. The Yellow Jackets led much of the game Thursday against York but went on a six minute scoring drought early in the fourth quarter as the Cougars stormed to victory. The two teams were tied at 38-all with six minutes left but BC didn't score another goal until Eddie Brown's basket with 25 seconds left. Jeff Stiles scored 12 points and Brown 10 for the Yellow Jackets. Friday night, Stiles scored 17 points and Brown 14 to lead the easy win ‘over Blacksburg. Ben Touchberry scored 13 and Travis Burris’ 10 for the Wildcats. THURSDAY GAME Blacksburg (38) - Burris 11, Sharpe 9, Garrison 4, Santana 3, Turner 2, Hale 2, Hirschy 2, Wallace 1.
