Preregistration payment day for returning students will be held Monday, Feb. 17 from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. in the Campus Center Building. New student orientation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. in the college auditori- um. New students will register and pay on orientation day. General registration will be held February 25 from 9 a.m.-1 p-m. and from 4-8 p.m. in the - Campus Center Building. Spring quarter classes begin March 3. New courses slated at Cleveland College Cleveland Community College will offer the course, Macrobiotic Cooking For Health, February 24 from 6-9 p-m. in campus room 1134. The cost is $20 and students should call 484-4015 or 484-4085 to pre- register. Participants will learn how to prepare foods which are both healthy and tasty using whole grains, beans, vegetables, seeds, nuts and fruits. The class will include lecture, demonstration, recipes and sampling foods. The class, Sewing - Making Patterns Fit, will be held each Tuesday March 4-April 8 from 6-8:30 p.m. in campus room 2007. Cost is $35. Instruction will include mak- ing patterns fit before cutting fabric and easy zipper insertion. Students should take pattern and sewing notions and a tape measure to the first class. WCU Family Night slated in Gastonia Western Carolina University will hold a family night pro- gram for prospective students, their parents and university alumni Thursday, Feb. 6 at 7 p-m. at the City Club .in Gastonia. Faculty mem- bers, staff and students will be available to answer questions;- and there will be a brief video presentation. Guest registration begins at 6:30 p.m. The program is open to any- one. Gaston Day students All-American Scholars Allison Hager of Kings Mountain and Krista Oopik of Shelby were among 26 Gaston Day School students to receive recognition as All-American Scholars. The All-American Scholar Award Program recognizes su- perior students who excel in the. academic disciplines. Students are nominated by their teachers for recognition by the United States Achievement Academy. Gaston Day School is an inde- pendent college preparatory school with an enrollment of 370 students in prekindergarten through grade 12. : KM student receives honors at Montreat Kevin Wease of Kings Mountain was recently named to the distinguished scholar’s list at Montreat College's School of Professional and Adult Studies. Students who achieve a grade point average of 3.9 or better are selected. Montreat College is a four- year liberal arts college located 15 miles cast of Asheville. The college's School of Professional and Adult Studies is a rapidly "f growing off-campus degree program for adults with classes meeting in Charlotte, Asheville, Montreat, Spindale, Marion, Murphy, and various other NC locations. CEREAL BOX HOUSE - Third graders in Connie Phifer Savell and Maxine Bennett's class at North School built a unique house for the recent celebration of the 100th day of school. The house was constructed of 100 cereal boxes the students collected and assembled on a cardboard frame with 55 glue sticks. The house has windows and a door and being used as a reading room. Children of veterans may get scholarships The North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs reminds high school seniors and other interested parties of the ongo- ing State Scholarship Program for children of certain disabled, deceased or POW/MIA veter- ans. Scholarships may be used at North Carolina colleges which are state-owned institu- tions of higher education, com- munity colleges and technical institutes; or privately-owned, nonprofit colleges and universi- ties. Scholarships, with one excep- tion, provide free tuition, cer- tain fees, and room and board allowances in state-owned insti- tutions and $4,500 per academic year in private institutions. The exception is that awards under the 100% service-connected dis- ability provision provide free tuition and certain fees in state- owned institutions and $1,500 . per academic year in privates stitutions. All awards’ are £6 four academic yeas in duration which must be used within 10 yeas from the date of the award. Interested persons are urged to contact the local Veterans Service Officer, P.O. KATY ROUNTREE Student of Month is busy young woman At 17 Katy Rountree of Grover is the third generation member of her family and the youngest to serve on the Session of Shiloh Presbyterian Church. rd Ba va Saturday she may have been the youngest ruling elder in the Presbytery of Western North Carolina to cast a vote for a chastity and fidelity amend- ment which passed 187-100 with two Elders abstaining. "This is an underlying homo- sexuality issue which has been a big issue and a controversial subject for about 20 years," said Katy. : "I was very impressed with the - meeting: at: First Presbyterian Church Morganton, although some folks seemed a little surprised to see me there and it won't be my last," said the daughter of Joe and Patsy Rountree of Grover. Joe Rountree is currently Clerk of the Session of Shiloh Church. His parents, Jackie Rountree and the late Glenn Rountree, were both active on the Session and his whole fami- ly are active in the work of the congregation. A junior student at Kings Mountain High School, Katy is Student of the Month, an honor voted by teachers. She is taking a full credit preparatory load with an eye toward teaching high school algebra.
