‘Wheeler to receive award at Belmont Abbey '*

Wheeler Jr, president and gen-
eral manager of Charlotte
Motor Speedway, will receive
the prestigious Grace Award in
ceremonies at Belmont Abbey
College February 21 at 6:30 p.m.
in the Student Commons.
The Grace Award is present-
ed each year to an outstanding
arca business person and citizen
whose contributions and com-
mitments have significantly im-
proved the quality of life
throughout the region.
Considered one of pro sports
most prolific promoters,
Wheeler has had a wide and
varied professional career in-
cluding stints as a writer, televi-
sion producer, management
consultant and boxing promot-
er. He joined CMS in 1975
Proceeds from the evening
will provide scholarship funds
for the families of employees of
the Belmont Abbey College
Associates. Anyone interested
in attending the event may call

- Misty Smith, a freshman
nursing major from Grover, was |
one of 109 students recognized
on the President's List for the
fall semester at Lenoir-Rhyne
College in Hickory.
The President's List includes
students with a grade point av-
erage of 3.9 or better on a 4.0
scale, provided the student car-
ries at least 12 hours of letter-
graded courses.

Public Services at Cleveland Community College.
Francis promoted at Cleveland Community College
Jean Francis has been named
Dean of Arts, Sciences and
Public Services at Cleveland
Community College. She previ-
ously served on the faculty as
Instructor of Psychology and
Sociology and has worked in
various capacities during her
career at the college as both a
student and employee.
Francis began at Cleveland
Community College as a stu-
dent in 1970. Midway between
completing her two-year associ-
ate degree in the medical secre-
tary field, she accepted a job as
secretary to the vice-president.
Shortly after receiving her de-
gree, she worked as assistant
bookkeeper in the college's
business office. While working
full-time, she continued her ed-
ucation, completing her bache-
lor's degree in business man-
agement from Limestone
College.
Francis’ career took another
turn at Cleveland as she moved
to the college's Student Services
Department as a student coun-
selor and later as Director of
Financial Aid. She completed
her master's degree in guidance
and counseling from the
University of South Carolina
during this time. She has also
completed further graduate
work at the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte.
Francis began teaching as
part of her job requirements
and later became a full-time in-
structor, In 1994, Francis was
named as the recipient of the
Excellence in Teaching Award
at CCC.
Francis is a board member of
CODAP and the Grover Library
Board. She is an Elder and or-
ganist at Shiloh Presbyterian
Church in Grover, is a member
of SOCIATION, and is a mem-
ber of the Grover Area Women's
Club. Francis is a native of
Grover and has two children.
