February 6, 1997 Sports Briefs THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD Lady Patriots win four in Tri-County Kings Mountain Middle School's girls basketball team won four games during the past two weeks to run their record to 5-3 in the Tri-County Conference. The Patriots defeated Crest 28-26, West Lincoln 34-19 and’ East Lincoln 44-37 last week, and defeated Shelby 31-20 Monday. The Lady Patriots host R-S Central on February 10, West Lincoln on February 11 and Lincolnton on February 13. Cherlyn Cole scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the win over Crest. Thea Currence had six points and Anna Ramey had four points and six rebounds. Ramey hit two foul shots with 29 seconds left to give KM the win. Ramey and Cole scored seven points each and Rence Hall and Keesha Brooks added six each in the win over West Lincoln. Hall and Ebony Moore grabbed seven rebounds each. Kings Mountain had to go overtime to defeat East Lincoln. The score was tied at 31-all at the end of regulation. Hall and Cole led the scoring with 14 points each. Currence and Ramey had six each. Cole pulled down 16 rebounds and Hall had eight. Ramey scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the victory over Shelby. Moore had eight points and seven re- bounds. Crystal Miller had four points, and Cole had three points and nine rebounds. Alley Cats grab lead in mixed bowling loop The Alley Cats swept the Outbackers 8-0, and the Hurricanes lost eight games to Storm in Mixed Duckpin Bowling League action Thursday night at Dilling Heating. The results moved the Cats into first place with an 18-14 The Scoreboard _ record, followed by the Outbackers and previous leader Storm at 16-16 each, and the Hurricanes 14-18. Russ Armstrong rolled a 124 line and 360 set and Irene Ruley added a 105-302 to lead the Alley Cats. Chuck Ruley had a 130 line and 327 set, Carol Raymer had a 115 line and 314 set, and Bill Myers had a 104 line and 305 set for the Outbackers. Bobby Rathbone's 129 line and 350 set led Storm over the Hurricanes. Zeke Rybczyk had a 121-322 and John Dilling added a 113-321. Tommy Barrett led the Hurricanes with a 142 line and 325 set. Moose's Marauders lead Tuesday league Moose's Marauders held onto first place, but the Cherry Pickers picked up two games on the leaders in Mixed Duckpin Bowling League action Tuesday night at Dilling Heating. The Marauders (22-10) de- feated the High Rollers (12-20) 6-2 while the Cherry Pickers (18-14) swept the Odd Balls (12- 20) 8-0. Chuck Ruley led the Marauders with a 118 line and 321 set, and Mark Abernathy led the High Rollers with a 108- 298. Balanced scoring was “the key for the Cherry Pickers. Zeke Rybczyk led with a 138 line and 365 set, John Dilling had a 125- 328, and Colleen Philbeck added a 111-324. Five Mounties win in SWC tournament North Gaston heavyweight Cole Beane edged Kings Mountain sophomore Julius Curry on a sudden death deci- sion to give the Wildcats a 216- 212 victory over the Mountaineers in the annual Southwestern 3-A Conference wrestling tournament Saturday at R-S Central. The victory gave the Wildcats both the regular season and tournament championships. KM finished second in both. Beane and Curry were tied at 1-all at the end of regulation and the two-minute overtime period. Beane scored one point in sudden death to get the vic- tory and break the tie in the team standings. Despite the team loss, Kings Mountain had five individual champions and three second place finishes. The top two wrestlers in each weight class made the All-Conference team. Winning titles for the Mountaineers were Jason Moore at 112 pounds, Jon Anders at 119, Eric Paul at 152, Anthony Ash at 160, and T.J. McClain at 215. Finishing sec- ond were Bobby Ormand at 125, Anthony Hillman at 189, and Curry at heavyweight. The ~-Mountaineers were scheduled to wrestle at Canton Pisgah last night in the opening round of the state dual team tournament. Duals will contin- ue the next two weeks and indi- viduals who qualify will com- pete in the Western Regionals February 14-15 at Enka High School. The State Championship will be February 21-22 at Independence Arena i in Charlotte. Wrestlers beat Enka, eliminated by Pisgah Kings Mountain High's wrestlers defeated Enka 39-34 but then lost to Canton Pisgah 45-25 in the Sectional Wrestling Tournament Tuesday night in Canton. The Mountaineers who quali- fy will enter the Western Regionals February 14-15 at Enka, and wrestlers who place there will advance to the State Tournament in Charlotte. KM winners against Enka in- cluded Bobby Ormand, who de- feated John Spencer 9-3; Eric Paul, who pinned Keith Atkins; Anthony Ash, who pinned Nathan Taylor; Anthony Hillman, who pinned Allen Israel; T.J. McClain, who pinned Kyle McCullock; Richie Wells, who pinned Matt Polson; and Julius Curry, who pinned Jamie Bullock. Winners against Canton Pisgah were John McDaniel, who pinned Chris Rudisill; Anthony Ash, who won a tech- nical fall over Danny Perry; Anthony Hillman, who pinned Andrew McArthur; T.J. McClain, who won by forfeit; and Julius Curry, who defeated Mark Hineman 7-3.
