BURNS
From 8-A
Wednesday, Friday and
Saturday at the home gym of
the #1 seed.
All four of the leaders will
advance to the state tournament
unless a team that finished low-
er than fourth wins the tourney.
. In that case, the #4 seed will
stay at home.
The Mountaineers got off to a
quick start against Burns and
ran their overall record to 14-7.
Marlon Byers hit three 3- ga
pointers and a two-point ficld
goal to score 11 of the
Mountaineers’ first quarter
points as they broke out to a 19-
14 lead. KM was on top 34-23 at
halftime and 46-39 going into
the fourth quarter.
Byers led the scoring with 18
points, Alex Burris came off the
‘bench to score 16 points and
block three shots, and Bryan
Odums added eight points and
a game-high 12 rebounds.
Sidney Crocker.-had a big
game with four points and four
assists, Burris had two steals
and Jawan McCree blocked
three shots.
_ The Mountaineers weren't up
to par defensively and at the
foul line. KM hit only 34 per-
cent of its free throws (8 of 22)
while Burns hit 56 percent (10
of 18).
"Our free throw shooting was
horrendous," said Sipe. "That's
something that hasn't been a
constant for us. We've been up
and down.
"But we did good offensively.
Marlon Byers got us off to a hot
start, and then we went to the
bench and brought in Alex
Burris'and he had 16 points. He
has really been a big spark for
us in the games that we've won.
To be able to go to the bench
like that and bring an offensive
player in."
The Mountaineers’ starting
point guard, Marcus Smith, had
to leave the game with an injury
in the fourth quarter, and Burris
was sidelined with four fouls,
and Sipe moved forward Joseph
Bell to the point guard.
"He did a great job running
the point for about a two-
minute stretch until we could
get some time off the clock and
get Alex back in the game, Tepe
said.
BW Kings Mountain got off to a
slow start in the girls game and
dropped a 53-48 decision de-
spite playing a tremendous sec-
ond half.
Burns led 25-15 at intermis-
sion but Kings Mountain came
back to cut the margin to 34-32
at the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Mountaineers took
the lead with four minutes to
play but Burns iced the game at
the foul line.
"We played them close the
second half," said Coach Tony
Leigh. "If we had played four
quarters like we did the third
and fourth it would have been a
different ball game.”
~ Narissa Lockhart ot Burns led
all scorers with 29 points. KM
had one of its most balanced
scoring attacks of the season
with Jacquie Hall scoring 19
points, Nikki Ingram 12 and
Kisha Hamrick 10.
The loss left
Mountaineers alone in fifth
place in the SWC standings.
They will have to win the SWC
tournament to qualify for the
state playoffs. The tourney will
begin Tuesday night at the
home gym of the #2 sced (prob- ol
ably North Gaston).
