A RPO RGA TI February 20, 1997 THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD Page 7A KM native Bud Mayes Renaissance Club growing at KMHS earns teaching award Dewey S. "Bud" Mayes, for- merly of Kings Mountain and an instructor at Wilkes Community College in North Wilkesboro, was honored re- cently with the Wilkes Community College Excellence in Teaching award, a joint pro- ject of the college and the WCC Endowment Corporation. Mayes was also selected as a semifinalist in the State Board of Community Colleges'/First Union Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award. Mayes is an instructor in three classes of Western Civilization as well as drama, study skills and history courses. He is the son of Mrs. H. Carl Mayes of Davidson, formerly of Kings Mountain, and the late Mr. Mayes and is a graduate of Appalachian State University with bachelor and master's de- grees. He and his wife, Rebecca, have one son Sean Mayes, of Bradenton, Fla. He has one sis- ter, Ann Mayes Ware of Concord, formerly of Kings Mountain. Mayes" sister describes her brother as " dynamic in the classroom." She says his stu- dents sit in rapt attention as Mayes, in his unique lecture style, brings other cultures and historical events to life for them with his powers of description and dramatic presentation. "Bud says that in all his years of teaching he is repeatedly sur- prised by how much students of all ages still enjoy a good sto- ry," said Ware. Mayes, whose teaching career spans 30 years, was instrumen- tal in the original development BUD MAYES of the associate in arts and the associate in fine arts college transfer curricula. Teaching loads of 24 credit hours or more with upwards of 150 students in the last two years have not stopped him from also developing and im- plementing four new history courses, directing a play, de- signing scts for another play and teaching Western Civilization three days a week at Ashe Central High School. His involvement in college theater has led to drama-relat- ed projects such as authoring an historical drama, the founding of a children's theater and the development of the Walker Center children's series in which every child in every grade in Wilkes County has a chance to see at least one show or concert cach year. Buddy Freeman to join staff at North Greenville College Rev. Charles W. "Buddy" Freeman, a Kings Mountain na- tive and dean of admissions and financial planning at Gardner-Webb University, has announced that he will join North Greenville College on bruary 27 as that school's ex- eeutive director of admissions and financial planning. The new post is the equivalent of a vice president's position and Freeman will sit on the presi- dent's council there. A 1962 graduate of Gardner- Webb, Freeman has served the university for 22 years, first as campus minister, then as associ- ate director of admissions for church relations, and finally as dean of admissions and finan- cial planning, a position he was appointed to two years ago. During his time as dean, he has had a significant role in Gardner-Webb's overall enroll- ment increasing nearly 20 per- cent, up to 2,648 currently, an all-time time for spring enroll- ment and the second highest to- tal ever for an overall Gardner- Webb enrollment. "This is a promotion for me," Freeman explained. "It's an op- portunity to join another fine Christian institution that's in an exciting growth phase. But I'm not going there to fix something that's broke - North Greenville is on the rise and it will be re- warding to be a part of that." He cited North Greenville's recent transition from a junior - college to a four-year institu- tion, its growing enrollment that has now topped 900, and the construction of two new dormitories as evidence of the school's progression and com- mitment to growth. "Anything to do with stu- dents - Christian students, REV. BUDDY FREEMAN bright students, students who want to learn and grow and bet- ter themselves - 1 simply love being a part of that," Freeman said. "That's the atmosphere here at Gardner-Webb, and that's the atmosphere at North Greenville. It's what I want to be a part of." While Freeman has held sev- eral positions within the institu- tion, his impact was felt outside of campus as well. A popular after-dinner speaker who has produced two tapes, he was of- ten sought to lead prayer re- treats, organize singing and preaching efforts, and to direct efforts that would assist minis- terial students who needed funds to pursue careers in the ministry. He even co-organized with the late Dr. J. ar Lewis the formation of the [© Christian Service eee | at GWU, which specifically rais- || es money to help aspiring min- isterial students. The assembly will honor the new recipients of the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards that KMHS students earned last term. As special guests, the en- tire ninth grade is invited to at- tend the ceremonies to acquaint them with the program. Bill Sherwood, owner of McDonalds in Kings Mountain, will be the guest speaker and will present a motivational speech about setting goals. Students receiving the new cards have met the criteria dur- ing the fall semester and many have already met goals of their own. The criteria for this year's awards remain the same as last year. To receive a Gold Card, a student must have a 4.0 GPA and cight or less absences per term. To receive a Silver Card, a student must have a 3.5 GPA and eight or less absences per term. To receive a Bronze Card, a student must have improved his or her GPA by .5 and have eight or less absences per term. The criteria was met by a to- tal of 329 students which is an increase from last term's 306 card holders. The largest in- crease was in Gold Card hold- ers, which increased by 34 per- cent. Gold Card holders are enti- tled to exempt all exams except state End-of-Course exams, and they receive a free parking pass. In addition, they are admitted free to all athletic and school events. Silver and Bronze card hold- ers receive coupons entitling them to free admission to select- ed athletic events and free homework "redo" passes. The Silver Card holders can exempt two academic exams as long as they are in good standing, and Bronze Card holders can ex- empt one exam in a subject where they have good standing. "The recent increase in card holders supports the idea that the Renaissance Club is a moti- | vation for students to work to- ward better grades and better’ attendance," said Media Specialist Gay G. Henderson. A committee of representa- tives from KMHS faculty, stu- dents and parents recently at- tended a Renaissance Conference at Sun Valley High School in Monroe. Media spe- cialist Gay Henderson, art in- structor Sherri Bingham, princi- pal Phil Weathers, and parent Priscilla Mauney accompanied students Katy Rountree and Monisone Phanthalack to Sun Valley to hear how other schools handle the Renaissance program. The program includ- ed an academic pep rally. "The committee was en- thused by the things that they learned about the success of the program,” Ms. Henderson said. "Those of us who have been in- volved at Kings Mountain High from the outset of the Renaissance Club look forward to its growing success as we im- plement the new ideas suited to our student body. We are proud to congratulate each new card holder and wish them contin- ued achievement in the future.” Card holders include: (Ninth Grade) Gold Card - David Angeles, Mindy Belt, Melita Betler, Blake Bolin, Jason Bridges, Brad Bridges, Heather Causby, Thea Creighton, Natasha Crocker, April Curry, MaryLee Dilling, Charlotte Fulton, Basit Gangoo, Anna George, David George, Zachary George, Haley Gingles, Jason Gladden, Cheryl Greene, John Hunter, Jessica Lynn, Danielle Marshall, Michael Martin, Daniel Mauney, Josh McDaniel, Ola Moore, Wendy Neisler, Miranda Ormsby, Mollie Patterson, Manisone Phanthalack, Teresa Rainey, Stephanie Saucier, Crystal Smart, Jennifer Sparks, Andrew Thomas, Melissa Visioli, Daniel Walker. .
