March 13, 1997 THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD Concert set March 16 at The Art Center din ses EE Bruce Corregan, classical gui- tarist, returns to Cleveland County along with flutist Jill, Muti for a special concert Sunday, march 16 at 3 p.m. at the Art Center, 111 South Washington Street. Corregan and his family moved to Cleveland County when he was in high school. He began playing the guitar at age 14. He attended Gardner-Webb University where he earned his Baccalaureate Music degree in performance. There, he was the first guitarist to win the GWU Concerto Competition, and was named recipient of the David M. Schweppe Memorial Music Award. He earned a master of Music Degree in 1993 from the University of South Carolina. His parents, Bruce and Betsy Corregan, still live in Cleveland County. Corregan has been likened to other young American musi- cians who have stepped for- ward to seize the high ground of contemporary music. With a focus on individual personality, grass roots music awareness, and bold programming he joins in the legacy established by a distinguished group of past gui- tar masters, including the late Andres Segovia. "He can play fast, knows how to turn a phrase, and thorough- ly knows his instrument. In the final analysis he is a good musi- cian with abundant talent, and is a memorable guitarist," said Scott Miller, Classical Guitar Society of the Western Carolinas. ; Muti holds degrees from Interlochen Arts Academy, Depauw University, the Wiener Hochschule ful Musik and Duke University. She has per- formed in Italy, Norway and Austria. She is a member of the St. Stephen's. Chamber Orchestra and the Tar River Orchestra. She has chaired the Fine Arts Department at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh since 1990, and was named Director of Fine Arts in 1993.
