A —— oo seme aa Te March 13, 1997 Steve Baker earns CLU designation Steve Baker, Development Associate with New York Life Insurance, has earned the Chartered Life Underwriter professional designation from The American College, Bryn Mawr, PA. The nation's oldest and largest, accredited distance education institutions, the College offers professional des- ignation and graduate degree programs for those seeking ca- reer growth in life insurance and financial services. Candidates for the CLU des- ignation must complete a ten- course curriculum of study and 20 hours of supervised exami- nations, and fulfill stringent ex- perience and ethical require- ments. More than 80,300 individuals have been awarded the CLU designation since the College was founded in 1927. The CLU program was de- signed by University of Pennsylvania professor Solomon S. Huebner, the College's founder, to meet the career education needs of men and women primarily in the life insurance field services and management. The subject mat- ter covered by the program in- cludes life and health insurance, pension planning, insurance law, income taxation, investments, financial and es- tate planning, and group bene fits. : Baker was educated in the Kings Mountain District Schools, and is a graduate of Pfeiffer College and with Master's studies at UNC-C. He was a teacher for 18 years at Kings Mountain High School. For the past 10 years he has been a sales associate and sales manager for New York Life. He is a registered representative for NYLife Securities, Inc., a mem- ber of the NALU, a qualifying member of the Million Dollar Round Table, and has qualified for some of his company's high- er production councils. Baker is a member of the Cleveland County Fellowship of Christian Athletes Adult Chapter. ‘Grigg joins Gaston Women's Healthcare Deborah Grigg, CNM, MSN, has joined the staff of Gaston Women's Healthcare, PA as the practice's first Certified Nurse Midwife. She specializes in care during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period including normal newborn deliveries. As a CNM, she will provide gynecological and obstetrical care to healthy women through- out the childbearing years. This care will focus on wellness, pre- vention, and the early identifi- cation of problems. If a problem should develop, Gaston Women's Healthcare physician are available for consultation or referral as needed. Grigg has 10 years of wom- en's healthcare experience. She previously worked as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Clinician at The Birthplace at Gaston Memorial Hospital. She holds an Associate Degree in Nursing from Gaston College, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from the University of - North Carolina at Charlotte and a Master's Degree in Nursing from East Carolina University. She has been inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, International Honor Society for Nurses and is a member of the American College of Nurse Midwives. She is board certified by the American College of Nurse- Midwives Certification Council and is licensed to practice in the state of North Carolina by the North Carolina Joint Committee on Midwifery Practice. She and her husband Eddie, have two children, Jessica and Andrew. Lowry of the Cleveland County Health Department recently attended a Master Train the Trainer session conducted by the N.C. Department of Insurance, Fire and Rescue Services Division and the UNC Highway Safety Research Center on child pas- senger safety seats. Lowry is now certified by those agencies to teach through the community college system a basic six-hour course and an ad- vanced 12-hour course in the use of child safety seats and ve- hicle restraint systems. The ba- sic curriculum provides partici- pants with an understanding and working knowledge of the proper use and installation of child safety seats. The advanced course is designed to prepare individuals to train others in safety seat use. Lowry is currently the coordi- nator of the Community Traffic Safety Program of the Cleveland County Health Department and provides in- struction on safety seat use through parenting classes of- . fered by the health department. Local apple growers to vote on assessment Commercial apple growers in North Carolina will vote March 26 on whether to continue a 3- cent assessment to promote the increased sale and use of ap- ples. The decision will be made through a referendum held by the N.C. Apple Growers Association. Producers can vote between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the county exten- sion offices in the commercial producing counties, including Cleveland, and also at Davis and Sons Apples Roadside Market in Lawndale. Greenhouse tour at KM State Park There will be a greenhouse tour Saturday< March 15 at 1 p.m. at Kings Mountain State Park. The program will last two hours. Participants will stroll through the greenhouse and learn how state parks were landscaped with native plants. Questions will be answered by a horticulturist on uses of in- digenous plants. All ages are welcome. For more information, call the park at (803) 222-3209. Spring events set at Mauney Library Mauney Memorial Library has scheduled several events this spring. Preschool art work will be ex- hibited at an art show during the months of April and May in Weir Auditorium. All art work by young people under the age of five should be submitted by March 31. ; Children's Librarian Louise Sanders said the art show is be- ing held in conjunction with a Spring Recital for children age 5 and younger April 19 at 7 p.m. in the library's auditorium. It will be open to the public and include performances by chil- dren in music, drama and dance. The Art Show will run the months of April and May and will be open to the public dur- ing regular library hours. John Weatherly of Cleveland County to the General Assembly's Environmental Review Commission. Hospice to conduct volunteer training Hospice of Cleveland County will conduct a two-day volun- teer training class at the Hospice Office at 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, March 17-18 from 8:30 a.m.-4:45 p.m. There will be a lunch break each day from 12-1 p.m. Participants may take bag lunches or go out to eat. Hospice volunteer training is open to anyone who is interest- ed in learning more about Hospice and the services pro- vided to the community. Local schools get Tech Prep grants Representative Andy Dedmon of Cleveland County has announced that all three Cleveland County Schools dis- tricts as well as the Gaston County Schools have received Tech Prep grants from the State Board of Education. Kings Mountain and Shelby Schools each received $1,200 grants, Cleveland County Schools received $1,966 and Gaston County Schools re- ceived $5,796.
