Galileo is the Georgia Library
Learning Online project which
connects the universities, public
libraries, and schools K-12 to an
online data base which includes
not only bibliographic citations
but the full text of many docu-
ments, journals, and other refer-
ence sources:This project was
spearheaded by the University
System of Georgia. The goal of
the project is to make available
as much information as possible
to as many people as possible
regardless pf; location, educa-
tional background or socioeco-
nomic status. :
North Carolina is working to
set up a similar Online Library
which is called NC Live. At a
meeting I recently attended
sponsored by the North
Carolina State Library, State
Librarian Sandy Cooper dis-
cussed the goals of the project,
the steps toward implementa-
tion, and the scope of the net-

work. She introduced Ralph
Wilson, the Library Consultant
for Georgia, who demonstrated
Galileo and discussed the prob-
lems and the progress of the
Online Learning Library.
NC Live is modeled on
Galileo. Mrs. Cooper talked
about he vision and goals of the
network, technical problems,
and the problems of funding. It
is a massive undertaking which
will bring library service in
North Carolina into the 21st
century.
North Carolina libraries share
a vision of each library in the
state serving as a gateway to
the total library resources in the
state as well as to a rich array of
electronic information. These
resources will be available to all
people of the state regardless of
location or tie through tradi-
tional and nontraditional
means.
