KM Hospital receives
$9,089 Duke grant
Kings Mountain Hospital has
received a $9,089 grant from the
Duke Endowment. More than
$4.1 million was awarded to 209
! hospitals and children's homes
in North and South Carolina.
The awards are made annual-
ly to all qualifying Carolinas’
hospitals and children's homes.
Hospital grants are based on
uncompensated days of care
provided to patients. Grants to
children's homes provide gener-
al operating support.
Park benches
still available
The Kings Mountain Business
& Professional Association is
still accepting orders for park
benches to be assembled by the
Kings Mountain High School
woodworking class.
President Kathy Neely said
the popular benches can be en-
graved with the names of the
person honored.

"The View from Here'
auditions set at KMLT
Kings Mountain Little
Theatre will hold auditions for
"The View from Here," a two-
act comedy, Friday and
‘Saturday, April 4-5 and
Tuesday, April 8, from 7-9 p.m.
at the Kings Mountain Woman's
Club.
"The cast consists of three
women and one man ages 30-
45.
The play is scheduled for pro-
duction June 13, 14, 20 and 21.

~ Poetry Alive! slated
April 8 at KM High
‘Poetry Alive" will perform in
local high schools ‘April 8-0 as
part of the Cleveland County
Arts Council's Arts in
Education series. These high-
energy shows are presented by
.a team of two professional per-
formers who have memorized
poems and then perform them
theatrically.
Performances are April 8 at
9:45 a.m. at Kings Mountain
High School and 1 p.m. at
Shelby High School; and April 9
at 9:45 a.m. at Burns High
School and 1:45 p.m. at Crest
High School.
Poetry Alive! was founded in
1984 and conducted its first
show in a music hall in Black
Mountain. The audience was
: made up of about 100 listeners.
One audience member was a
teacher who saw the education-
al potential of the show and
- asked Poetry Alive! to visit her
classes.

Kings Mountain District
Schools, Shelby City Schools

AARP notes
10th anniversary
The Kings Mountain Chapter
4063 American Association of
Retired Persons recently cele-
brated its 10th anniversary and
received commendation from
State President Thelma C.
Lennon.
Chapter members recently at-
tended a workshop in
Morganton sponsored by Burke
County AARP. Making the trip
were O. C. Kiser, Bill Alexander,
‘Carolyn Bell, Hilda Goforth,
Jeanette Surratte, Myetta Oats
and Marvetta Spann.
Hole-In-One Shootout
Charity League benefit
The Shelby Junior Charity
League will sponsor a $1 mil-
lion dollar hole-in-one shootout
April 16-20 at Challenger 3 golf
Course to benefit the Clothing
Room.
Last year 141 qualifiers par-
ticipated in the fun event. The
shootout works much like a
closest-to-the-pin contest. Tees
will be set up during the com-
petition. Golfers will pay $1 per
ball to shoot at a special green
approximately 150 yards from
the tee. Lucky golfers will qual-
ify for Sunday's finals and a
chance to shoot for $1 million
dollars.
Participants must be 18 years
old to enter and amateurs only
can participate. For advance
tickets, seven balls for $5, call
480-6785.
Sponsors of the event are
Belk of Cleveland Mall,
Interstate Johnson Lane and
Londre Chiropractic Center.
Clothing Room supplies cloth-
ing to hundreds of needy school
children in Cleveland County.

MB A spring bird walk will be
held Saturday, April 19.
Participants will listen to the
different calls of common birds
which migrate back to Kings
Mountain in the spring. Take
binoculars, bird books and a
snack. The program is designed
for ages 12 through adult.
Register by April 18. The fee
is $3 per person. Meet at the
campground parking lot by 9:30
a.m. for the two-hour program.
BM "Spring Bloomers" will be
held Wednesday, April 26.
Participants will watch for
the spring beauty of trilliums,
orchids and other wildflowers
as they hike Kings Mountain's
trails. Take a drink and lunch.
This is a moderately strenu-
ous hike designed for ages 10
through adult.
The fee is $5 per person.
Register by April 23. Meet at
the campground parking lot by
10 a.m. for the three-hour pro-
gram.
Rep. Andy Dedmon
named Caucus whip
Rep. Andy Dedmon of
Cleveland County is the only
freshman named a whip for the
N.C. House Democratic
Caucus.
His duties will include keep-
ing House Democrats informed
about upcoming votes, devel-
oping strategy and shaping leg-
islation.
He also will make sure that
the Cleveland County area will
have a voice in the House
Democratic leadership.
"I look forward to having
Rep. Dedmon as a part of the
leadership team," House
Minority Leader Jim Black said.
Dedmon's district includes
Cleveland and Rutherford
Counties and parts of Gaston
and Polk Counties.
