KM Hospital receives $9,089 Duke grant Kings Mountain Hospital has received a $9,089 grant from the Duke Endowment. More than $4.1 million was awarded to 209 ! hospitals and children's homes in North and South Carolina. The awards are made annual- ly to all qualifying Carolinas’ hospitals and children's homes. Hospital grants are based on uncompensated days of care provided to patients. Grants to children's homes provide gener- al operating support. Park benches still available The Kings Mountain Business & Professional Association is still accepting orders for park benches to be assembled by the Kings Mountain High School woodworking class. President Kathy Neely said the popular benches can be en- graved with the names of the person honored. AARP notes 10th anniversary The Kings Mountain Chapter 4063 American Association of Retired Persons recently cele- brated its 10th anniversary and received commendation from State President Thelma C. Hole-In-One Shootout Charity League benefit The Shelby Junior Charity League will sponsor a $1 mil- lion dollar hole-in-one shootout April 16-20 at Challenger 3 golf Course to benefit the Clothing Room. Last year 141 qualifiers par- ticipated in the fun event. The shootout works much like a closest-to-the-pin contest. Tees will be set up during the com- petition. Golfers will pay $1 per ball to shoot at a special green approximately 150 yards from the tee. Lucky golfers will qual- ify for Sunday's finals and a chance to shoot for $1 million dollars. Participants must be 18 years old to enter and amateurs only can participate. For advance tickets, seven balls for $5, call 480-6785. Meet at the campground parking lot by 10 a.m. for the three-hour pro- gram. Rep. Andy Dedmon named Caucus whip Rep. Andy Dedmon of Cleveland County is the only freshman named a whip for the N.C. House Democratic Caucus. His duties will include keep- ing House Democrats informed about upcoming votes, devel- oping strategy and shaping leg- islation. He also will make sure that the Cleveland County area will have a voice in the House Democratic leadership. "I look forward to having Rep. Dedmon as a part of the leadership team," House Minority Leader Jim Black said. Dedmon's district includes Cleveland and Rutherford Counties and parts of Gaston and Polk Counties. Birthdays Hannah Sutton Colleen and David Sutton of Charlotte announce the birth of their first child,’ Hannah-Paige: Sutton, March 24, 1997. She weighed three pounds, three ounces and was 17 inches long. Her father is a 1977 graduate of Kings Mountain High School.
