BRENT HARP Harp moves up to KMPD Patrol "Police work opens your eyes to what's going on in the iworld," says Ptl.' Brent Harp one of the newest patrol officers at Kings Mountain Police Department. Harp, 30, says working a real job in law enforcement is much different from watching police television shows. Harp said he learned first- hand about law enforcement when he used to ride patrol with his brother-in-law, Chris Smith, in the Gastonia Police Department and then later as a Reserve policeman with KMPD. "I admire Chris, who works for Gastonia PD, and my broth- er-in-law Steve Smith, who works with the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department, for their dedication and I decid- ed to change careers and com- pleted rookie school at Gaston College," he said. Harp became a reserve po- liceman in Kings Mountain in November 1995 and a full time officer February 26 . He is a member of C Squad which also includes Patrolmen Andy Berry, Steven Skinner and Chris Moore and dispatcher Diane Whetstine. Harp was in the printing business for a number of years, running a four-color press at Revere Printing in Shelby and. at Triple D Printing. A 1985 graduate of Shelby High School, he is the son of Allen and Judy Harp of Shelby. Harp is married to Teresa Smith Harp. He has two step- daughters, Heather Lemmons, 16, and Haley Lemmons, 10. They are members of Putnam Memorial Baptist Church in Shelby. Family activities in- clude trips to the beach. Harp recommends police work as a rewarding career for young people. "I have been in training with ‘Ptl. Andy Berry and he's good :at what he does and I have ap- ‘preciated working with all our ‘dedicated officers here in Kings Mountain," he said. Police Chief Bob Hayes said :Harp's experience in Reserves is of benefit to him and any new officer who joins the force. “Brent learned the street loca- tions and he's a good officer," said Hayes. i To subscribe to : the Herald : call 739-7496 .
