Pulling teenagers off the streets and into drug- free activities is the goal of East Gold Street Wesleyan Methodist Church's innovative project. Curtis Williams, assistant pastor of the church, said Planet X is the name given to the outdoor program which was started by Jason Harper, a ~ youth pastor in Sacramento, California and is quickly spreading around the country. By summertime Williams envisions that 1,000 teenagers from Cleveland and Gaston Counties will have fun on skateboard and rollerblade ramps and at basketball goals already set up on the church's big parking lot. Other games like ping pong, volleyball, sumo wrestling, nintendo, videos, ‘a Cafe X for refreshments, a live band and drama groups presenting the gospel story will feature the free entertainment. ; The kickoff for Kings Mountain's Planet X will be April 25 from 6-10 p.m. and is open to all teens who attend middle school or high school. Williams, who moved to Kings Mountain from St. Petersburg, Fla. nearly four years ago, sees the program as an extension of missions and reminds youth they don't have to belong to any church to attend. "This is a project for our community but our goal is to build a bridge from the community to sanctuary and provide our area teens with a place they can have fun," he said. Rev. Harold Bumby, the church's senior pastor, is also enthusiastic about the new program which has the blessings of the church board. This week Williams was-handing out tickets to Planet X in the middle and high schools and promoting the upcoming program in newspapers and on radio.
